Top Reasons to Visit the Walt Disney Concert Hall

There are places in Los Angeles that simply take your breath away, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall is one of them. Designed by the visionary architect Frank Gehry, this gleaming landmark in the heart of downtown LA isn’t just a concert venue; it’s an experience that blends music, art, architecture, and culture into something unforgettable.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to explore new corners, there’s always something fresh to discover within its stainless-steel curves.

We’ve curated a special list of experiences that highlight the very best of what this remarkable destination has to offer.

This guide was created especially for those who love to uncover hidden gems and want to experience the magic of LA’s cultural heart, perfect for families, travelers, and anyone seeking a deeper connection with the city’s artistic soul.

1 –Concerts

Walt Disney Concert Hall

Description:

When you step inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall, you are entering the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (LA Phil) and a world-class performance venue. The hall’s acoustics, architectural drama and prime downtown address make any concert experience special.

From symphonic masterworks to innovative contemporary programs, you’ll find yourself immersed in sound and space.

The seating capacity is approximately 2,265, and the hall opened in 2003, designed by architect Frank Gehry with acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota. Because you’re close to the musicians in a “vineyard-style” terraced auditorium, the concertgoer often feels part of the performance rather than simply observing it.

Visit the WDCH and attend a concert, you’ll love everything about the experience and the magnificent architecture.

The lobby and exterior are dramatic, and the fact that you’re in the LA Phil’s flagship home makes it all the more memorable.

2 – Tours

Description:

In addition to attending a performance, you can explore the Walt Disney Concert Hall through guided and self-guided tours. The venue offers complimentary self-guided audio tours, and docent-led guided tours for groups.

For self-guided tours: they run daily (typically 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), begin in the Grand Avenue Lobby, and no reservations are required for individuals or groups up to 14 guests.

For docent-led tours (groups of 15 or more), a charge applies (e.g., around $15 per guest) and reservations are required. Importantly: tours do not include the main auditorium due to rehearsal and performance scheduling.

For homeschool families, the tours are also an outstanding educational opportunity. Both the self-guided and docent-led tours provide an engaging way to connect music, art, architecture, and history; making them a perfect addition to your field trip list.

When planning your visit, check the schedule in advance because performance times may alter tour availability, and some areas may be closed. The tours are one-hour long and give a behind-the-scenes view of the architecture, acoustics, and design elements.

3 – Ira Gershwin Gallery

walt-disney-concert-hall Art Gallery

Description:

Another highly rewarding feature of WDCH is the Ira Gershwin Gallery (formally the Library of Congress/Ira Gershwin Gallery) located on the second floor of the hall. The gallery was established through a gift from the Ira and Leonore Gershwin Trust for the Benefit of the Library of Congress, and it hosts rotating exhibitions drawn from the Library’s collections.

Past exhibitions have covered a wide range of things: for example, one explored the art of vocal jazz from the 1920s to the present, featuring video clips, musical scores, correspondence and watercolors.

Because the gallery rotates bi-annually, there’s always something fresh to see and often with an interesting cultural or historical angle. Visiting the gallery adds a contemplative, quieter moment to your concert hall experience; less about performance, more about reflection and curation.

If you’re a visitor who enjoys music history, design, or archival exhibits, the gallery offers depth. Also, since it’s housed within the same building, it allows you to combine architecture, music and visual culture in one outing.

It’s a great way to extend your visit beyond the main auditorium and catch a hidden gem inside the venue.

4 – The Blue Ribbon Garden

Walt Disney Concert Hall The Blue Ribbon Garden

Description:

One of the most delightful surprises of the Walt Disney Concert Hall is upstairs in the nearly-acre-sized rooftop garden known as the Blue Ribbon Garden.

Nestled behind the grand stainless-steel curves of the building, the garden offers a peaceful retreat for everyone to enjoy. The landscaping, seating areas, and horticulture create a lush, shaded oasis.

At the heart of the garden is the fountain sculpture “A Rose for Lilly,” designed by Frank Gehry as a tribute to Lillian Disney, and made from broken fragments of Royal Delft porcelain vases in the shape of a rose. The fountain itself is a sculptural work of art, and the garden setting enhances its quiet beauty.

Visiting the Blue Ribbon Garden is a wonderful way to round out your trip – before a show, during intermission, or after. Take a seat on a bench, enjoy the greenery, and appreciate a different facet of the Walt Disney Concert Hall experience.

For families or visitors who want a break between concerts or tours, it’s a welcome space. Since it’s free to access and open to the public, it’s one of the unsung perks of this architectural icon.
