1 – Best Festivals in LA in May

One of the most family friendly events of the season is the Clockshop Kite Festival, on May 9  from 2:00–6:00 PM at Los Angeles State Historic Park.

This free to attend celebration fills the sky with color while offering art workshops, live music, and community programming that bring people together in a relaxed outdoor setting. It is the kind of event that feels distinctly local yet beautifully universal, inviting both kids and adults to slow down and enjoy a simple, joyful afternoon.

A Garden Explorer wristband grants access to all participating gardens and includes a printed guide with maps and descriptions, making it easy to plan your route. Complimentary hop-on, hop-off buses run throughout the day, so you can comfortably travel between neighborhoods without worrying about parking or logistics.

From May 23 to 25, visitors can explore active-duty ships, enjoy tours of the iconic Battleship USS Iowa, and take part in a full lineup of activities including military displays, live music, exhibits, food trucks, and family-friendly entertainment.

Another great coastal event is Fiesta Hermosa on May 23 to 25. Set near the Hermosa Beach Pier, this free festival features an acoustic stage, local vendor booths, great food, drinks, and even a Wine Garden. With easy park-and-ride access, bike valet, and rideshare drop-offs, it’s designed for a smooth, carefree day by the ocean.

For something a little more eclectic, Topanga Days adds a creative, community-driven twist with live music, artisan vendors, and a laid-back canyon atmosphere—making it another beloved tradition to round out the holiday weekend.
