Delusion

More than just a standard walk-through, Delusion is an immersive, interactive horror theater experience that continually redefines the genre. Guests don’t merely observe the scenes—they become central characters in the story. Staged at the historic Beckett Mansion in West Adams, the narrative plunges visitors deep into an unsettling supernatural mystery. 

Expect high interactivity: you might be asked to carry strange artifacts, speak lines, or step away from your group to face terrifying scenarios alone. The venue also features a two-story lounge where guests can enjoy themed cocktails, food, and music before or after stepping into the dark world. 

The current production, Den of the Mosquito, brings the experience back to the historic Beckett Mansion in Los Angeles. Set in 1920s New Orleans, it follows a secret organization investigating a supernatural mystery involving mobsters, monsters, and vampires.

Beware the Dark Realm

This Santa Clarita neighborhood haunt proves you don’t need a studio budget to create an impressive Halloween attraction. Its detailed scenery, animatronics, and theatrical effects have made it a favorite among local horror fans.

The attraction changes its theme, giving returning visitors something new to discover. The current production, Season of the Witch, trades last season’s music-inspired storyline for a fresh round of scares. Admission has traditionally been free, with donations welcomed.

Skullcraft Street Haunt

Hidden in a quiet West Hills neighborhood, Skullcraft Street Haunt takes Halloween decorating to a whole new level. This elaborate residential attraction transforms an ordinary front yard into a spooky spectacle filled with animated monsters, eerie lighting, swirling fog, and impressive special effects. 

Every corner is packed with creative details, from creepy graveyard scenes to larger-than-life creatures that look like they belong on a movie set. What makes Skullcraft Street so much fun is the imagination and effort behind it all. 

The themed displays create an atmosphere that is both spooky and entertaining, giving visitors plenty to admire from the sidewalk without relying entirely on jump scares.

Nestled on a quiet residential street in Tarzana, this dark, gothic attraction is one of the longest-running and most atmospheric home haunts in Los Angeles. 

This experience focuses on subtle, eerie mood-building, featuring flickering lanterns, elaborate graveyard set pieces, ghostly fog, and mysterious spectral figures haunting the grounds. 

The attention to detail is remarkable, and the handmade decorations give the entire display a personality of its own. It’s spooky without being overwhelming, making it a fun stop for families and Halloween enthusiasts who appreciate a beautifully crafted haunt.

For decades, Burbank’s Rotten Apple 907 has been a staple of Southern California’s home-haunt culture. 

Run entirely by volunteers, this attraction reinvents its maze annually with totally new concepts, from dark fantasy realm portals to twisted holiday nightmares. Admission remains free, with voluntary contributions directly supporting local non-profit organizations like the Burbank Animal Shelter.

Hellizondo Haunt

Located in Canoga Park, Hellizondo Haunt is a walkthrough neighborhood attraction that rivals commercial haunted houses in scale and intensity.

Los Angeles Zoo 

The Los Angeles Zoo transforms into a festive Halloween playground with its annual “Boo at the L.A. Zoo” event. The family-friendly celebration takes place across two weekends: Saturday and Sunday, October 24–25, and Saturday and Sunday, October 31–November 1.

This family-friendly celebration is perfect for kids of all ages. Expect trick-or-treat stations scattered throughout the zoo, hands-on crafts, and animal encounters with a spooky twist. Kids will have a blast with the generous candy offerings—many houses hand out full-sized candy bars or creative treats. The community spirit here is unbeatable, with families setting up spooky yard displays, music, and even interactive haunted setups.

• Averill Park Area: The residential area near Averill Park is especially famous for its elaborate, creative displays and immersive atmosphere.
• Crafted at the Port of LA: On October 31st, families can also trick-or-treat inside the Marketplace at Crafted from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Trick-or-treating in Angelino Heights offers a more intimate neighborhood vibe. The streets are often bustling with costumed families, and the homeowners are known for their generous candy handouts.

Beverly Hills

For a classic neighborhood trick-or-treating experience with a glamorous Los Angeles twist, Beverly Hills is a great place to spend Halloween night. But the biggest Halloween attraction here is undoubtedly The Witch’s House, also known as the Spadena House, at 516 N. Walden Drive. With its dramatically sloped roof, tiny windows, crooked storybook appearance, and whimsical landscaping, the home looks like something straight out of a fairy tale—and Halloween is the perfect time to see it.

The house has an appropriately Hollywood backstory. Designed by art director Harry Oliver, it was originally constructed in the early 1920s for Willat Productions in Culver City, where it served as a production office, movie set, and dressing-room building. It was moved to Beverly Hills in 1924 and converted into a residence. Today, the City of Beverly Hills recognizes the Witch’s House as an official historic landmark.

Another extra tip: if you just want to see the house itself be sure to go in early October during the day. On Halloween and the days leading up to it the line to see the house can get long.

The house is private and not open inside for visitors, even during Halloween but its cool to see even from the sidewalk.

• The Witch’s House: Make 516 N. Walden Drive one of your stops while exploring the neighborhood. Even from the sidewalk, it’s one of the most memorable Halloween sights in Los Angeles.
• Storybook Halloween Setting: Beverly Hills’ large homes, tree-lined residential streets, and elaborate seasonal decorations make wandering the neighborhood almost as much fun as collecting the candy.
• Hollywood History: The Witch’s House connects Halloween night with L.A.’s movie-making past. Its theatrical appearance isn’t an imitation—it actually began life as part of a movie studio.
• Be Respectful: The Witch’s House is a private residence and the surrounding streets are residential. Enjoy the view from the public sidewalk, keep driveways clear, and be considerate of homeowners and neighbors while trick-or-treating.

Toluca Lake 

For a fun and family-friendly Halloween outing, Toluca Lake is a legendary trick-or-treat spot. Nestled near Burbank and Studio City, the neighborhood has long been known as a Halloween hotspot, partly thanks to its history of celebrity residents who often participate in the festivities.

Streets are lined with extravagantly decorated homes, and families can expect some of the best candy hauls in Los Angeles. Neighbors go all out with Halloween decorations including massive skeletons, spooky graveyards, and animatronic monsters.

• Key Trick-or-Treat Streets: The best trick-or-treating can usually be found around Moorpark Street and Ledge Avenue, where houses go all-out with candy and decorations.

October in Los Angeles is one of the most exciting times of the year. The city fills its calendar with Halloween celebrations, glowing pumpkin displays, cultural festivals, outdoor events, Día de los Muertos celebrations, and plenty of seasonal food and drinks.

Halloween may get much of the attention, but there is much more happening around LA this month. October still brings plenty of warm, sunny days, making it a great time to explore the city, attend an outdoor festival, or plan a quick getaway.

So get your calendar ready. Here are some of the best October events in Los Angeles you don’t want to miss.

Best Pumpkin Display Events in LA

One of LA’s most impressive pumpkin events returns to Descanso Gardens this October. Carved runs nightly from October 2 through November 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Thousands of hand-carved pumpkins, illuminated displays, and fall installations transform the gardens after dark. The experience takes visitors through beautiful sections of Descanso Gardens filled with glowing pumpkins and seasonal displays.

Capacity is limited, so purchasing tickets in advance is recommended, especially if you plan to visit on a weekend.

Another favorite is Night of the Jack at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas. Running on select nights from September 25 through November 1, the event features a one-mile immersive walking trail filled with larger-than-life jack-o’-lantern installations, interactive displays, lights, and plenty of Halloween photo opportunities.

The grounds open at 5:30 p.m., with timed trail entrances beginning at 6:00 p.m. Food trucks, themed cocktails, specialty drinks, and other activities are also available before and after the walk. Comfortable shoes are a must since the main attraction is a mile-long trail.

For even more pumpkins, head to Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns at South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes. The family-friendly event runs on select nights from September 18 through November 1.

More than 10,000 hand-carved jack-o’-lanterns illuminate a mile-long walking trail. This year’s displays include a whimsical circus, an under-the-sea experience, a Día de los Muertos tribute, towering inflatables, interactive activities, and a synchronized pumpkin light show every 30 minutes.

Guests can also add 3D Jack O’Lantern glasses or a s’mores package to their visit, while the Fun Zone features a giant pumpkin-shaped bounce pad and oversized slides.

The Most Fun and Free Halloween Carnivals in LA

Halloween celebrations take over communities across Los Angeles and Orange County in October, and some of the best events are completely free.

One of the biggest is the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval, returning Saturday, October 31, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

More than 100,000 costumed revelers are expected to fill Santa Monica Boulevard for this famous street celebration. The free event stretches along Santa Monica Boulevard between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard, with elaborate costumes, live music, entertainment, and plenty of people watching.

This is one of LA’s biggest Halloween parties and is especially popular with adults and older teens looking for a lively Halloween night out.

For something much more family focused, visit the La Palma Annual Halloween Carnival on Saturday, October 24, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Central Park.

This free community celebration features carnival games, treats, giveaways, and costume contests with categories including funniest, scariest, most original, best duo, best family or group, and even best pet costume. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.

Día de los Muertos Celebrations

Los Angeles is home to vibrant Día de los Muertos traditions, and late October brings beautiful celebrations throughout the city. Altars filled with flowers, candles, photographs, art, and personal objects honor family members and loved ones who have passed away.

One of LA’s most historic Día de los Muertos celebrations takes place along Olvera Street, where the holiday has long been marked with community altars, traditional ceremonies, processions, music, and cultural activities. Visitors can walk through the historic district while learning more about the traditions surrounding Día de los Muertos.

Another major celebration takes place in San Pedro. The 15th Annual San Pedro Día de los Muertos Festival is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Historic Downtown San Pedro.

This free, family-friendly festival celebrates Latin and Mexican heritage with colorful altars, live entertainment, Aztec and folklórico performances, local artists, food vendors, cultural activities, and a Catrina contest. Thousands of visitors are expected to gather in downtown San Pedro for the annual celebration.

Downtown LA also celebrates with Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos, running from October 24 through November 2..

The free exhibition fills the park with community ofrendas created by local artists and organizations. Opening Day on October 24 will include mariachi music, folklórico dancers, art-making activities, and other programming. Visitors can return throughout the exhibition to explore the altars and learn more about the traditions and stories represented in the installations.

The Most Kid-Friendly Halloween Events in LA

Families with younger children have plenty of Halloween celebrations to choose from this year.

Boo at the L.A. Zoo returns for two weekends: October 24 and 25 and October 31 and November 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Kids can dress in costume and explore trick-or-treating stations, Halloween photo opportunities, special keeper talks, live performances, and animal pumpkin enrichment activities. Best of all, Boo at the L.A. Zoo is included with regular zoo admission or an active zoo membership.

For children ages 2 to 8, the DTLA Halloween Festival for Kids returns to Grand Hope Park on Saturday, October 31, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The ticketed celebration includes trick-or-treating at real doors placed throughout the park, character meet-and-greets, live performances, arts and crafts, dancing, and giveaways. Children under age 3 enter free.

And if your family wants a full day at a theme park, Knott’s Spooky Farm runs Thursdays through Sundays from September 24 through October 31, plus Columbus Day. The daytime celebration offers a much less frightening alternative to Knott’s Scary Farm and is designed for families and younger children.

Halloween Events for Older Kids and Adults

For those who prefer their Halloween celebrations genuinely scary, October offers several major attractions.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood runs on select nights through November 1. The event includes eight haunted houses, scare zones, the Terror Tram, live entertainment, and themed food and drinks.

This year’s haunted houses include experiences inspired by Sinners, Stranger Things, Hellraiser, Evil Dead Burn, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Ozzy Osbourne, along with original creations. Halloween Horror Nights is separately ticketed and begins at 7:00 p.m.

You can also head to Griffith Park for the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, returning on select nights through November 1. The famous nighttime attraction combines its haunted hayride with additional scare experiences and themed entertainment.

The Haunted Hayride features a new attraction called Fallen Angel, centered around a fictional rock band’s disastrous final Halloween rehearsal and the spirits that remain behind.

October Events That Have Nothing to Do With Halloween

Not everything in October involves pumpkins and ghosts.

On Sunday, October 11, CicLAvia Heart of LA opens more than 6.5 miles of Los Angeles streets to pedestrians, cyclists, skaters, and families.

The free event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and connects Downtown LA, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Arts District, Boyle Heights, and Echo Park. You don’t need a bicycle to participate. Visitors can walk, skate, explore neighborhoods, stop for food, or simply experience some of LA’s busiest streets without cars.

Another huge October event is the 21st Annual Taste of Soul Family Festival, taking place Saturday, October 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. along historic Crenshaw Boulevard.

This free celebration of Black culture and community brings together live music, food, local businesses, health and wellness resources, family activities, and community organizations.

The festival has grown into one of Southern California’s largest free street festivals and remains one of the month’s biggest community celebrations.

Restaurants and Bars with Great Halloween Atmosphere

October is also a great excuse to visit some of LA and Orange County’s most unusual restaurants and bars.

For something mysterious, The Obscure in Downtown LA’s Arts District offers an immersive two-hour cocktail tasting experience built around six pours, storytelling, and a dark, candlelit atmosphere. It isn’t simply a Halloween pop-up. The venue has its mystical look year-round, which makes October an especially fitting time to visit.

For an even more playful Halloween setting, head to The Cauldron Spirits & Brews in Buena Park. The witch-themed restaurant and bar features spooky décor, creative cocktails, skulls, a firepit, and even a hidden room behind a bookshelf.

Its location across from Knott’s Berry Farm also makes it easy to combine with other Halloween attractions in Buena Park.

Adults looking for something more theatrical can check out HauntOberfest at The Nocturne Theatre in Glendale, running October 10 through October 31.

The two-hour immersive experience combines Oktoberfest traditions with supernatural storytelling, roaming characters, live performances, themed drinks, and interactive experiences.

October in Los Angeles gives you plenty of reasons to get out of the house. While Los Angeles is famous for its sandy beaches, entertainment, and iconic landmarks, some of Southern California’s most captivating scenery lies beneath the surface.

From rocky reefs along the Malibu and Palos Verdes coastlines to the giant kelp forests surrounding Catalina Island, the waters near LA offer surprising opportunities for underwater exploration.

Pacific waters in Southern California are cool year-round, and visibility varies depending on swells, wind, and tides. On a calm day, however, snorkelers can discover kelp forests, bright orange Garibaldi, rays, and harbor seals just minutes from the urban bustle.

Channel Islands National Park

For an immersive, full-day adventure, Channel Islands National Park offers world-class snorkeling. Five of the eight Channel Islands make up the national park: Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel.

The surrounding waters feature protected marine reserves with dense kelp canopy, underwater caves, and an abundance of marine life.

• Scorpion Anchorage (Santa Cruz Island): The easiest and most popular snorkeling destination in the park. The calm, clear waters of the bay allow easy entry from Scorpion Beach to explore kelp beds near the pier and eastern cliffs. Guided excursions and gear rentals are available on-site through the park’s official concessioner.
• Landing Cove (Anacapa Island): A popular spot for experienced snorkelers featuring dramatic drop-offs, clear water, and high fish density within a fully protected marine reserve.

Getting There: Daily ferries operate primarily out of Ventura Harbor via Island Packers Cruises. Because water temperatures range from 55°F to 70°F and no lifeguards are on-duty, a 3mm to 5mm wetsuit is strongly recommended.

Note: Dock access at Santa Barbara Island is currently restricted due to past storm damage, so check the National Park Service website for current island access schedules.

Point Dume State Beach in Malibu

Malibu’s dramatic headlands provide scenic views above water and rich marine habitats below. Point Dume State Beach features rocky coves, tide pools, and protected kelp beds that attract a wide variety of marine species.

Snorkelers exploring around the rocky points can spot California’s state marine fish, the bright orange Garibaldi, alongside rockfish, calico bass, sea urchins, and bat rays. Pods of dolphins, sea lions, and harbor seals frequent this stretch of coast.

Conditions & Access: Point Dume is exposed to open ocean swells, making conditions variable. Beginners should stick to protected pockets like Pirate’s Cove on calm days. Always check wave forecasts and local park conditions before entering the water.

Diver’s Cove and Shaw’s Cove in Laguna Beach

Located south of LA in Orange County, Laguna Beach boasts a citywide network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that keep its underwater habitats thriving.

• Diver’s Cove: Positioned just north of Main Beach, this compact cove offers an intimate setting shielded from large ocean swells. Shallow rocky reefs house opaleye, sea stars, colorful nudibranchs, and occasional octopuses.
• Shaw’s Cove: Located adjacent to Diver’s Cove, Shaw’s Cove is one of Southern California’s premier shore-entry diving and snorkeling spots, renowned for its extensive kelp beds and underwater rock structures.

Santa Catalina Island

A short boat ride across the channel leads to Catalina Island, known for exceptional water visibility and concentrated sea life.

• Lover’s Cove Marine Conservation Area: Located a short walk from Avalon, this shallow, protected bay is one of the most accessible snorkel spots in Southern California. Schooling fish swim within feet of the shore, making it ideal for beginners.
• Casino Point Dive Park: Situated next to the historic Catalina Casino, this dedicated underwater park features kelp forests, sunken wrecks, giant sea bass, and playful harbor seals.
• Two Harbors: Located at the island’s quieter west end, Two Harbors offers a remote, serene atmosphere with gear rentals and guided tours available through the local dive center.

Getting There: Passenger ferries operate daily to Avalon and Two Harbors via Catalina Express (departing from Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point) and the Catalina Flyer (departing from Newport Beach). Full equipment and wetsuit rentals are available near the piers in both Avalon and Two Harbors.

Terranea Cove and the Palos Verdes Coast
