Hello LA families! LA’s coastlines offer more than just beautiful views and sunbathing—some beaches are home to fantastic playgrounds built right on the sand.

These oceanfront play areas blend the best of beach fun with safe, imaginative spaces for children to climb, swing, and slide to their hearts’ content.

For those of you looking for that fun playground right on the beach for the family, this is your new go-to guide. Each spot has been hand-picked for its combination of beachfront charm, convenience, and pure playground joy. From San Pedro to Santa Monica and Venice, here are five of the top sandy playgrounds for your little explorers.

1 –  Kids Playground at Cabrillo Beach, San Pedro

Cabrillo Beach San Pedro

Description:

Tucked away in the southern tip of Los Angeles, Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro is a hidden gem that locals love. The beach features a spacious, sandy playground situated right next to the shoreline, making it perfect for kids who want to alternate between building sandcastles and climbing jungle gyms.

With its nautical-themed structures, including a ship-shaped playset, Cabrillo captures the imagination of young adventurers.

The setting here is as scenic as it is family-friendly. Parents can relax on the beach with an eye on both the playground and the glistening waters of the Pacific. On calm days, the water in the protected cove stays gentle, making it safer for young swimmers.

Plus, the nearby Cabrillo Marine Aquarium adds an educational twist to the outing—just a short walk from the playground!

There are also plenty of amenities: restrooms, shaded picnic areas, and ample parking (a rare treat in LA!). Because the playground sits directly on the beach, families can spend hours here without needing to pack up and relocate. It’s a perfect one-stop destination for sun, sea, and play.

Hack:  The San Pedro aquarium is located just a few steps away from the beach! Visit them and enjoy all the learning and fun exhibits during your day at the beach.  It’s free of charge but you are welcome to leave a donation as you enter the aquarium.

2 – Marina del Rey Mother’s Beach Playground

Marina del Rey CA Playground

Description:

Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey is specifically designed with families in mind. Nestled in a calm, protected marina cove, this beach offers a relaxing escape from the crashing surf you’ll find elsewhere. The beachside playground here is surrounded by soft sand, shaded by palm trees, and filled with colorful equipment just steps from the water.

What makes Mother’s Beach extra special is the serenity of its setting. The water here is extremely gentle-ideal for toddlers and younger children who are still learning their way around the ocean.

While the little ones play, parents can enjoy a quiet breeze and watch the boats drift by in the marina. There’s a calmness here that sets it apart from the hustle of other LA beaches.

There’s also a grassy picnic area, bathrooms, and even a bike path nearby. Lifeguards are often on duty, and there’s plenty of parking close to the beach.

Whether you’re coming for a birthday party or just a spontaneous beach day, Mother’s Beach makes it easy to enjoy quality time together.  No stress, just sun and smiles.

3 – South Beach Park Playground, Santa Monica

Santa Monica South Beach

If you’re heading to Santa Monica, don’t miss the colorful and modern South Beach Park Playground, located just steps from the iconic pier.

This beachfront gem is one of the newer additions to the area and offers an imaginative, ocean-themed play space with equipment for both toddlers and older kids.

It’s fully accessible, thoughtfully designed, and surrounded by soft beach sand.

What makes South Beach Park especially appealing is its location. While the kids climb the play structures and fly down the slides, the sound of waves and the salty breeze create a beach day atmosphere that’s hard to beat.

Parents can relax on benches or picnic in nearby grassy areas while keeping an eye on the action. The view of the Santa Monica Pier in the background adds an extra bit of charm to the whole scene.

It’s also just a short walk from some of Santa Monica’s top attractions. After playing, families can stroll over to the pier for a ride on the carousel or grab a treat from one of the many snack stands.

Restrooms and parking are available nearby, making it an easy, breezy choice for a fun day out.

4 – Veteran’s Park Playground, Redondo Beach

Veterans Park in Redondo Beach Playground

Description:

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean from a grassy bluff, Veteran’s Park in Redondo Beach offers a truly stunning setting for a family outing.

The playground here isn’t directly in the sand, but it’s just a short and easy stroll down to the beach—perfect for mixing land and sea fun.

The equipment is well-maintained and shaded by mature trees, with play options suitable for a variety of ages.

The real showstopper here is the view. As kids swing and slide, families can take in sweeping vistas of the sparkling ocean and Redondo Pier.

It’s a great place to snap photos, enjoy a picnic, or just take a breather while the kids burn off energy. The elevated location also offers a nice breeze, which helps keep everyone cool on sunny days.

Once you’re ready for the beach, it’s just a quick walk down a paved path to the sand. The beach area itself is wide and beautiful, with plenty of space to stretch out.

Between the playground, the views, and the easy access to the water, Veteran’s Park is a coastal classic that’s perfect for a full day of fun.

Hack:  Spend some time exploring the famous Redondo Beach Pier, and if you like seafood then you are in for a treat.  This place offers delicious seafood at the bottom pier!

5 – Venice Beach Kids Playground

Venice Beach Playground

Description:

Venice Beach is known for its bohemian spirit, street performers, and colorful murals—but did you know it also features a fantastic kids’ playground right on the sand? Tucked just off the boardwalk, the Venice Beach Kids Playground is a welcome oasis for families visiting this lively part of the coast. With soft sand underfoot and modern play structures, it’s a great spot to let the kids run wild.

The playground includes swings, slides, and climbing equipment all set on the beach itself, giving kids the perfect combination of structured play and beachy freedom.

There’s even a shaded section for little ones who need a break from the sun. Parents will appreciate the convenience of being close to restrooms, food stands, and the boardwalk action, all while keeping an eye on the kids.

It’s an excellent pit stop during a day of exploring Venice. After some time on the swings, take a walk along the Ocean Front Walk, grab a smoothie, or check out the skate park nearby.

The whole area buzzes with energy and creativity, making this playground feel like a mini adventure within the greater Venice experience.

One of the best ways to enjoy the water, have fun and get in shape is paddleboarding! And this Summer there are plenty of opportunities to paddleboard at some of the most beautiful destinations near Los Angeles.

Whether you want to enjoy coastal vibes, harbor paddling, or inland lakes, Los Angeles offers a wide range of paddle boarding destinations.

We collected some of the best places for you, enjoy nature and have a great time while paddleboarding. These areas are also great for picnic lunches, and splendid pictures, or just relaxing between paddles.  If you are on a day date, you can also stop by one of the many eateries nearby.  Enjoy!

1 – Marina del Rey

Marina del Rey

Description:

Marina del Rey is well known as one of the most beginner-friendly spot for paddleboarding in Los Angeles. Its protected harbor means calm waters, minimal waves, and a serene environment that’s ideal for both first-timers and experienced paddlers looking for a relaxed day out.

It’s also conveniently located just minutes from Venice Beach, making it easily accessible from most parts of the city.

What sets Marina del Rey apart is the sheer variety of routes and views. Paddle through the marina among luxurious yachts, glide past waterfront homes, and enjoy a peaceful afternoon with little boat traffic during weekdays. If you’re lucky, you might even spot sea lions lounging on the docks or pelicans diving for fish nearby.

Numerous SUP rental shops dot the harbor, many of which also offer beginner lessons and guided tours. Whether you want a quick hour-long excursion or a full day out on the water, Marina del Rey makes it easy to dive into paddleboarding without any stress.

2 – Paradise Cove

Malibu Paradise Cove

Description:

If you’re looking for that picture-perfect paddleboarding backdrop, Paradise Cove in Malibu is hard to beat. With dramatic cliffs, clear blue waters, and white sand beaches, it feels like a scene out of a movie—which makes sense, considering how many have been filmed here.

The cove is tucked away from major currents and strong surf, making it a relatively safe and peaceful location for beginning and experience paddle boarders alike.

The early morning hours are usually the best time to hit the water, with glassy conditions that are perfect for gliding along the coast. You can explore nearby rock formations and sea caves or just drift along, soaking in the incredible ocean views.

Because the cove is relatively small, it’s great for leisurely paddles without venturing too far from shore.

Parking at Paradise Cove can be expensive unless you validate by dining at the Paradise Cove Beach Café, but it’s worth the experience.

Just be sure to check the tide schedule and aim for a sunny, calm day—wind can sometimes pick up in the afternoon and make paddling more of a challenge.

3 – Alamitos Bay in Long Beach

Alamitos Bay

Description:

For those willing to make the drive a bit south of L.A., Alamitos Bay in Long Beach is a paddleboarding paradise. With its calm, protected waters and wide open channels, it’s ideal for longer paddles or group outings.

The Bay is flanked by Naples Island, which adds a charming, European-style vibe with its network of canals and waterfront homes.

Paddling through the canals of Naples feels like a mini escape to Venice, Italy—without the passport. The narrow waterways offer a unique and peaceful experience, with little boat traffic and plenty of shade. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet and upscale, creating a laid-back vibe that’s perfect for a leisurely cruise.

Rental options are plentiful, with several vendors located right near the water.  It’s also close to some great restaurants and coffee shops, making it easy to turn your paddle session into a full-day mini getaway.

Location: 205 N Marina Dr, Long Beach, CA 9080

4 – Redondo Beach Harbor

Redondo Beach

Description:

Redondo Beach Harbor might not get as much buzz as Santa Monica or Venice, but it’s a gem for paddleboarders in the South Bay. The harbor is shielded from ocean swell, which keeps the water calm and flat—ideal for practicing your technique or trying SUP yoga.

With the iconic King Harbor Marina and pier nearby, there’s no shortage of gorgeous scenery.

You’ll likely encounter marine life here, including sea lions, dolphins, and a variety of seabirds. The water is relatively clean for a harbor, and early mornings offer especially smooth paddling conditions.

The inner harbor is great for beginners, while more experienced paddlers can venture out along the breakwater for a bit more adventure.

There’s plenty of parking, and rental shops like Paddle House and Redondo Beach Adventures make it easy to gear up and get going.

After your session, we recommend you grab a bite at one of the waterfront restaurants or walk the Redondo Pier for a relaxing post-paddle cooldown.

Location: 208 Yacht Club Way, Redondo Beach, CA 90277

5 – Castaic Lake

Castaic Lake

Description:

If you’re in the mood for something a bit different—away from the coast and into the hills—head north to Castaic Lake in the Santa Clarita Valley. About an hour’s drive from downtown L.A., this city in north west LA County has a freshwater reservoir that offers a scenic and uncrowded alternative to the Pacific Ocean.

The upper lake is designated for boating and water sports, while the lower lake is ideal for non-motorized activities like paddleboarding.

The calm, wide-open space is perfect for a long-distance paddle or a relaxing float. Since it’s a reservoir, the water stays fairly calm all day long, and the lack of ocean currents makes it ideal for families and novice paddlers.

The surrounding hills and oak trees create a peaceful, almost alpine feel that’s totally different from the typical L.A. beach scene.

Just keep in mind there’s a small entrance fee to access the lake, and the facilities close around sunset. But with picnic areas, trails, and even fishing zones nearby, Castaic Lake is more than just a paddleboarding spot—it’s a full outdoor experience.

Bring lunch, spend the day, and enjoy a quiet side of Southern California that most Angelenos overlook.

Also before making plans to visit be sure to check current conditions. In Spring of 2025 there were some closures due to wildfires and we are not sure at the time of this writing when those will be resolved.

April is also a time to celebrate LA’s rich arts and culture scene, with festivals that promise inspiration and reflection. The LA Times Festival of Books (April 26-27) at USC brings together authors, artists, and readers for a weekend of book signings, panel discussions, and literary fun.

And don’t miss the Bob Baker 11th Annual Festival, a special event focusing on recovery through the arts as we rebuild from the LA wildfires. It’s a heartfelt way to honor resilience, creativity, and community in the face of adversity.

Whether you’re here for the food, the culture, or both, LA’s April festivals are the perfect excuse to explore and appreciate the beautiful city of Angels.

Get ready to witness some breathtaking celestial events this year. From dazzling meteor showers to awe-inspiring lunar displays, the night sky above Los Angeles has plenty in store for stargazers.

You probably already know that meteor showers occur when Earth passes through debris fields left by comets or asteroids. As these tiny particles enter the atmosphere, they burn up, creating streaks of light across the sky.

The beauty of meteor showers though, lies in their unpredictability—while forecasts provide a peak rate, every shower holds the potential for surprise bursts of activity.

Don’t miss your best opportunity to see these gorgeous displays with our guide below.

1 –  Quadrantids (January 3-4)

Griffith Park Stargazing

Description:

  • Peak Night: January 3
  • Estimated Rate: Up to 120 meteors per hour
  • Best Viewing Time: After midnight to pre-dawn

The Quadrantids are known for their bright meteors and short peaks. In 2025, a nearly full moon will challenge visibility, but bright meteors can still cut through.

While perhaps less famous than the Perseids or Geminids, the Quadrantids can offer a dazzling display of “shooting stars” for those willing to brave the winter chill.  Head to Griffith Park or Malibu for darker skies.

Viewing Tip: Focus on the northeastern sky near the constellation Bootes.

2 – Lyrids (April 21-22)

Topanga Stargazing

Description:

  • Peak Night: April 21
  • Estimated Rate: Up to 20 meteors per hour
  • Best Viewing Time: Midnight to pre-dawn

The Lyrids are one of the oldest documented meteor showers, and in 2025, they will benefit from minimal moonlight. Escape the city glow by driving to Topanga State Park or the Santa Monica Mountains.

Viewing Tip: Look for the radiant near the constellation Lyra, which contains the bright star Vega.

3 – Eta Aquarids (May 5-6)

Malibu Stargazing

Description:

  • Peak Night: May 5
  • Estimated Rate: Up to 50 meteors per hour
  • Best Viewing Time: Early morning before dawn

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower is linked to Halley’s Comet.  This beautiful spectacle graces our skies every May, and it’s better visible from the Southern Hemisphere. However, Los Angeles’ early risers can catch a moderate display.

Head to El Matador Beach or Leo Carrillo State Park for a great view.

Viewing Tip: The radiant lies in the southeastern sky near the constellation Aquarius.

4 – Perseids (August 11-13)

Perseid Meteor

Description:

  • Peak Nights: August 11-12
  • Estimated Rate: Up to 100 meteors per hour
  • Best Viewing Time: Late night to pre-dawn

The Perseids are a favorite for stargazers worldwide due to their high activity and bright meteors. With a new moon in 2025, conditions will be perfect. Escape to Joshua Tree National Park or Mount Pinos for unparalleled views.

Viewing Tip: Find the radiant near the constellation Perseus in the northeastern sky.

5 – Orionids (October 21-22)

Yoshua Tree meteor shower

Description:

  • Peak Night: October 21
  • Estimated Rate: Up to 20 meteors per hour
  • Best Viewing Time: After midnight

This is another product of Halley’s Comet!  The Orionids are known for their speed, entering Earth’s atmosphere at around 148,000 miles per hour.

While the Orionids feature moderate activity, they are known for producing occasional bright fireballs.

This year, a crescent moon will set early, ensuring dark skies. Try stargazing from Malibu Creek State Park, Joshua Tree National Park or Vasquez Rocks.

6 – Leonids (November 17-18)

Los angeles meteor shower

Description:

  • Peak Night: November 17
  • Estimated Rate: Up to 15 meteors per hour
  • Best Viewing Time: After midnight

While not a storm year, the Leonids will still produce a modest show in 2025. Their radiant rises late, so plan to stay out after midnight. The Angeles National Forest offers a great spot close to LA.

Viewing Tip: Look for the radiant in the eastern sky near the constellation Leo.

Location: varioius

7 – Geminids (December 13-14)

Big Bear meteor shower

Description:

  • Peak Night: December 13
  • Estimated Rate: Up to 150 meteors per hour
  • Best Viewing Time: Late night to pre-dawn

The Geminids are widely regarded as the best meteor shower of the year. With a crescent moon in 2025, the sky will be dark enough for an incredible show.

Drive to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve or Big Bear Lake for a magical experience.

Viewing Tip: Focus on the radiant near the constellation Gemini, particularly the stars Castor and Pollux.
