Are you craving a weekend escape that blends outdoor adventure, cultural immersion, and luxurious comfort? Look no further than Conejo Valley.

One of the best things about living in Los Angeles is close access to visit other amazing Southern California towns. And Conejo Valley is a perfect example. Less than an hour from DTLA and nestled between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, this hidden gem offers a diverse array of experiences.  It makes for a perfect quick family road trip, or weekend getaway.

We recently worked with Visit Conejo Valley and they shared some of the best of their best suggestions for our trip to “See Another Side of Southern California”. After exploring ourselves here are five must-do activities that we are sharing from our recent trip to the Conejo Valley.

We were there for a full weekend getaway, so we included a recommendation from our delightful stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Thousand Oaks Agoura Hills.

1 –  Fantastic Accommodations

Courtyard By Marriot Thousand Oaks

Description:

Conejo Valley offers tremendous beauty, so it is not difficult to find a wonderful place to stay. But we were very pleased with our experience there and highly recommend Courtyard by Marriott Thousand Oaks Agoura Hills

This hotel is conveniently located near Conejo Valley’s top attractions. The hotel is beautiful, and it offers modern amenities and comfortable accommodation for a peaceful stay.

You can also expect friendly staff ready to help you and your group during your stay.  Also, treat yourself to a delicious meal at The Bistro, serving a variety of breakfast and dinner options, along with evening cocktails.

To enhance your experience, the hotel is equipped with an enchanting courtyard, and a large swimming pool. And do not forget to check out their fitness center to work off some of the calories you will be gaining during this trip.

2 –Where to Eat

Mouthful Thousand Oaks

Description:

No matter what meal or time of day it is, we have some of the best places to eat in Conejo Valley here for you.

Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Eggs ‘n Things, a beloved local spot renowned for its pancakes, omelets, and, of course, eggs prepared in various styles. From classic favorites to innovative creations, there is something on the menu to satisfy every palate.  We highly recommend you try the other special they are highly known for, their delicious and authentic Swedish pancakes! The tasty combination of butter, fruit, and of course powdered sugar will get your day off to a great start.

Our personal favorite spot to have lunch in the Conejo Valley is Mouthful Eatery in Thousand Oaks.  This Peruvian casual eatery is led by a talented chef Luis Sanchez and his enthusiastic commitment to seasonal ingredients.  Mouthful’s menu features the most vibrant and tasty salads, sandwiches, and bowls that you can customize with your choice of protein and other fabulous ingredients.  And they are all delicious!

For a taste of the local craft beer scene, head over to Tarantula Hill Brewing. This cool brewery boasts a welcoming atmosphere and a diverse selection of handcrafted beers, perfect for enjoying with friends or savoring solo.  They also have a terrific menu, we love their savory tacos, or try one of their tasty wood fired pizzas.

Looking for a more vibrant yet sophisticated place for dinner? Then look no further than Plata Cocina.  With 2 locations in the Conejo Valley this contemporary eatery specializes in Mexican cuisine with a modern flair and is the go-to spot for locals with a craving for Mexican food and margaritas.

From sizzling fajitas to flavorful tacos and zesty ceviche, Plata Cocina takes diners on a culinary journey through the diverse regions of Mexico. Pair your meal with a refreshing margarita or mezcal cocktail for the perfect combination of flavors and spirits.

No foodie adventure is complete without a visit to a beloved local deli. Italia Deli in Agoura Hills is family owned and operated and has been a Conejo Valley staple since it first opened in 1981. This local gem offers a wide selection of imported Italian cheeses, meats, and other gourmet products. But we recommend you grab a delicious panini or Italian sandwich from the deli for a picnic lunch at one of the beautiful outdoor nature spots nearby.

Finally, indulge your sweet tooth at Little Calf Creamery. Yet another Thousand Oaks local favorite, this artisanal ice cream shop uses fresh, local ingredients to create unique and delicious flavors. From classic vanilla to adventurous options like lavender honey or goat cheese caramel, there is a scoop for everyone. And all times of day, hot or cold, you will find a line of locals waiting to enjoy their treat.

For Los Angeles standards its pretty cold for Winter 2024 so we are on the hunt for foods that will keep you warm. Seasonal winter food can be so delicious, cozy, and warm.  And some are also full of flavors, rich textures, and picture perfect presentations.  True LA Hackers know that our city has some great winter comfort food options, even though the temperatures don’t dip dramatically. It’s a great time to embrace all the diversity of the city through its wide selection of comfort foods.

In this list we have some delicious recommendations where you can find some of the best winter dishes in LA. Remember to take your guests or friends and enjoy them all before the season is over.

1 – Soups and Stews

Pho

Description:

Our first recommendation is Pho soup, this delicious warm broth is one of the most popular dishes in winter time here in Los Angeles.  The rich, savory broth, adorned with thinly sliced beef, and fresh herbs, becomes a welcome respite from the crisp winter air, providing a culinary journey that marries the essence of Vietnamese comfort with the laid-back vibes of Los Angeles.  Take a trip to Little Saigon in the OC for an authentic experience, and enjoy the soup at one of the several restaurants in this area.

Caldo the Res or Beef Soup is next in our list.  The cool crisp air calls for a hearty and soul-warming dish – like Mexican or Salvadorian caldo de Res. Amidst the palm-lined streets and under the winter sun, this traditional beef soup takes center stage in the quest for comfort food.  Find it at any warm and cozy Mexican or Salvadorian restaurant near neighborhoods like Boyle Heights, East LA, or Highland Park.  We like El Salsabor, but there are several other great places in LA.

Looking for more great soups?  Ward off the chill with a steaming bowl of comforting ramen soup. Los Angeles, known for its diverse culinary scene, is a haven for ramen enthusiasts seeking a warming and flavorful experience. High on our list is a visit to Daikokuya in Little Tokyo. Renowned for its rich and flavorful broth, this cozy spot boasts an authentic atmosphere that transports diners straight to the streets of Tokyo. Their signature Daikoku Ramen, featuring succulent pork belly and perfectly cooked noodles, is a winter treat that satisfies both the taste buds and the soul.

2 –  Korean Bowls

Bibimbap

Description:

Los Angeles, offers a tantalizing array of Korean bowls that delight the senses and satisfy the cravings of hard to please foodies, especially at this time a year.  Begin your Korean bowl adventure in Koreatown of course, and at the epicenter of Korean culture and cuisine in LA, here you’ll discover The Corner Place

This hidden gem is renowned for its delectable dolsot bibimbap, served in a sizzling stone pot that crisps the rice to perfection. The combination of savory toppings, including marinated beef, vegetables, and a fried egg, creates a harmonious medley of flavors that captures the essence of authentic Korean cuisine.

Venturing into the Sawtelle Japantown neighborhood, you’ll find Bopomofo Cafe, a cozy spot that seamlessly blends Korean and Taiwanese influences. Their signature Stone Pot Bopomofo Bibimbap offers a delightful twist to the traditional dish, with the addition of Taiwanese sausage and a perfectly fried egg, creating a symphony of textures and tastes.

3 – Roasted Meats

Majordōmo

Description:

Take your foodie comfort expectations to a luxurious level with a visit to Majordōmo.  This fine restaurant will impress you and your guests with the delicious dish Bo Ssam: This whole (or half) smoked and glazed pork shoulder served with all the fixings like lettuce, perilla leaves, and ssamjang is a feast for the soul and perfect for sharing.

Do you love Pot Roast? Make sure to visit The Jar, and come hungry as you enjoy decadent braised short ribs with creamy mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables.  Enjoy ultimate comfort in a cozy atmosphere in this modern American chophouse restaurant.

Location: various

4 – Hot Pot

HotPot

Description:

There’s nothing quite like gathering around a steaming pot of hot pot to chase away the chill and fill your belly with pure comfort.

Hot Pot’s beauty lies in its endless possibilities. Choose your broth – spicy Sichuan, savory tomato, or maybe a delicate mushroom – then dive into a smorgasbord of fresh meats, seafood, vegetables, and noodles. Each dip into the bubbling pot is a mini-celebration, as thinly sliced meats cook in seconds, veggies soften to tender perfection, and noodles soak up the rich broth like sponges.

From mega chain restaurants to small family owned joins, LA has a big array of Hot Pot options for you to enjoy this winter season.  If looking for a well known and loved hot pot chain look no further than The Boiling Point.  With multiple locations across Los Angeles, Boiling Point offers a variety of broths and ingredients, from classic Taiwanese hot pot to spicy Sichuan options. Bring the whole family, everyone will find a favorite broth.

Craving some heat? Try Qianlixiang Spicy Hot Pot.  This Sichuan-inspired hot pot spot will have your taste buds tingling. Their fiery broths are packed with chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns, but don’t worry, you can adjust the spice level to your liking.

These are some of our favorites, but there are plenty more around town for you to explore.  Especially if you are strolling around  Arcadia, Torrance, or San Gabriel.  Enjoy everyone!

5 – Warmest Drinks and Desserts

Churros Calientes Santa Monica

Description:

Okay, okay, yes we have the sweets suggestions for you too. Just because it’s cold in January does not mean there are not perfect desserts for the season and we have to start with churros and Champurrado.

Start your sweet tour at Churros Calientes in Santa Monica.  The inviting ambiance, coupled with the heavenly aroma of freshly fried churros, makes this Santa Monica gem a must-visit.  opt for the classic cinnamon sugar-dusted churros or venture into the realm of filled options like chocolate or dulce de leche.

Have you had your champurrado today?  You must get one on Olvera Street.  Los Angeles’s oldest Mexican marketplace, Olvera Street, is a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and smells. Among the colorful papel picado, flags and lively mariachi music, you’ll find the delicious warm chocolatey Mexican drink also known as champurrado, bubbling away in clay pots at nearly every corner.

Last but not least is the winter LA dessert superstar, Bread Pudding.  The city of Angels offers bread pudding in all its glorious forms, from classic comfort to innovative twists.  Where to find it?  Our top recommendation is The Morrison in Los Feliz.

The Morrison reigns supreme in the realm of classic bread pudding. This cozy gastropub crafts their masterpiece with buttery brioche, plump raisins, and a hint of orange zest. The warm, custardy pudding arrives crowned with a generous scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and a buttery caramel drizzle. Each bite is a delightful dance of textures and flavors, a comforting hug on a chilly LA winter evening.

Other great places to visit when craving bread pudding include The Auld Fella in Culver City, and Pitchoun in DTLA.  Pitchoun is a Parisian-inspired haven in downtown, offering a decadent bread pudding that features toasted baguette soaked in creamy custard and laced with vanilla and rum.

So that’s it Angelenos, enjoy all our suggestions, adventure your palate and discover your new winter favorite flavors.

The modern food truck phenomenon that started in about 2008 and spread like wildfire across the country can mostly be attributed to the city of Los Angeles. Of course food trucks existed before but the modern and ubiquitous trucks we see now was kicked off by chef Roy Choi and his Kogi truck concept.

Now of course Food Trucks remain super popular around the nation and in LA, and although Pop Ups kind of took the flare of the trucks for a bit, they’re back strong around town looking to make some noise this season.

Some of us are always out hunting for that truck that carries those hard to find yummy treats we crave.  Others might just enjoy the convenience of a quick bite they can access right outside their workplace.

Browse through this awesome list, and find some of the most delicious and highly rated trucks available in the city of Los Angeles.

Topanga is a very special place, with a Bohemian ambiance mixed with nature that has drawn many artists and musicians to visit and ultimately stay.  These wonderful and fun residents have enhanced the natural beauty of Topanga an turned into an enchanted town, where visitors can expect to find artistic unique treasures.

We put together this list of fun spots to visit in beautiful but quirky Topanga.   Check them out the next time you visit and have a great time eating at delicious interesting places, shopping new artistic pieces for your home or someone special.  Take a fun scenic hike, or simply come to take a break from the chaos of the city and connect with nature for a bit.

1 – Hiking

Topanga State Park

Description:

Topanga State Park is well known for its seemingly never ending number of spectacular hiking trails.  Visiting Topanga State Park is a great remedy when in need for a does of nature and gorgeous scenic views.  This massive preserve offers you variety of trails, beautiful peaceful areas perfect suited to meditate and connect with nature.  Remember your hiking shoes, water and sunscreen, even when the season is cool.   If you like the outdoors but prefer shady paths, we recommend you try Trippet Ranch Nature Trail.

Another gem of a hike in Topanga, is the super famous Lookout Trail.  Most experienced hikers will agree that this is a mild 2 mile hike, and it’s great for beginners.  If you enjoy mellow nature walks with rather flat paths type of trails, this one can be considered a moderate hike for you.

It’s a phenomenal trail, part of it is paved and part of it is dirt terrain, so wear shoes accordingly.  Bring your camera, because the views at the end of the path are striking, there is also tons of graffiti on a platform on the top making for a unique experience to take in.

2 – Great Wall of Topanga

The Great Wall of Topanga

Description:

Topanga is a very special city with a number of inhabitants who had chosen to move here and live in ways where they can be closer to nature, and also to find artistic inspirations.  The city features a Bohemian ambiance, and many musicians and artists that have visited here decided to stay and make Topanga their permanent home.

One remarkable example of the artistic ambiance in Topanga, involves a fun wall  located north of the corner of Hillside Drive and Topanga Canyon Boulevard.  The wall was born after the creation of one of its residents, who has contributed with all the materials for the decoration of the wall.  Some artists have stopped by over the years and also have contributed with their designs.  The owner Rick Denman, uses recycled toys and other artifacts of his own to fill up the wall.

The Great Wall of Topanga, as it is known today, it’s very picturesque, and intriguing.  Some may say the art in this wall  is trash, and it is in fact built with reused toys and other objects.  But it’s indeed the initiative of creating messages composed in oversized tinker toys, and the repurpose of used objects to display innovative designs that makes this wall true art.  Don’t you think? Come see for yourself, and while you are there take cool pictures. It’s a very quick stop of maybe 5-10 minutes to take in the scene but a must do to check off the list for a visit to Topanga.

3 – Café On 27

Cafe 27 Topanga

Description:

If you want to eat while visiting and go to a place that captures some of the beauty of the area you must plan a stop at Café on 27 when you are in Topanga.  This is a magical restaurant, with some incredible views of Topanga Canyon on their outdoor dining terrace.

The food is also good of course and one of our favorites was the Waffereso. This tasty waffle that was almost like a dessert, is topped with espresso butter, cinnamon, raspberries, and chocolate sauce and will have you happy for the day and ready for the calorie burning hike.  If your not in the brunch mood try the California pizza, with its delicious cauliflower crust was also a favorite.

But food aside the coolest thing about this Café and what brings the crowds in is the outdoor dining terrace. You feel like you are eating in the tallest tree house ever, surrounded by green trees and shrubs with magnificent views of Topanga Canyon.  This beautiful café is pet friendly and wheel chair accessible, and it’s open every day until 4:00 pm. while reservations are required on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you want to get the best seat in the house, on the terrace with the views, we highly recommend you get there in the first hour they are open. On weekends its already packed by 10AM.

Hidden Treasures Topanga

Description:

As expected this Bohemian eclectic town has a picturesque Downtown with quirky and enchanting shops.  You will be captivated with all the unique items available, one of a kind findings and artistic décor pieces.

Check out Spiral Staircase Bookstore, a true local gem located right next to the charming restaurant Inn of The Seventh Ray. This is not your typical book shop and what some would call a “new age bookstore” filled with special items including metaphysical tomes, crystals and other fun things.  And everywhere you turn there is plant and foliage so tons of opportunities for beautiful pictures that capture the essence of a day in Topanga.

Hidden Treasures is another must stop in Topanga packed with color, vibes and funky vintage items.  This is the place to go if you want a cool shopping experience and to capture some one of a kind selfies.  The vibes are super fun here and they even have a pirate trunk by the door, where people can browse interesting pieces on clearance.

Moona Star is another unique shop we recommend you to visit when in Topanga.  Here you can find handmade clothing, and plant dyed pieces and other goods.  The perfect place to find gifts, exclusive clothing and collections.
