Next is Enchanted Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens.  The venue is turning its 150 acres into an immersive, walk-through dreamscape.

Each section of the garden glows with creative art installations: trees wrapped in jewel tones, paths lined with shifting patterns of light, and fields of “blooming” bulbs that pulse gently to music.

Visitors can stroll at their own pace through this one-mile outdoor experience, where interactive exhibits invite you to step, wave, or spin to watch light respond in real time.

Also, this season be sure to visit the Lightscape at the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanical Garden.  This beautiful experience offers an awesome winter journey through illuminated nature.

Here are our top recommendations for the best neighborhoods to visit this season, each offering its own unique atmosphere and tradition.

One of the most beloved traditions is the Upper Hastings Ranch Holiday Light Display in Pasadena, a community effort that dates back to the 1950s. Residents coordinate elaborate themes street by street.  This is one of the most fun of all neighborhoods to visit! 

Next is Candy Cane Lane  in Woodland Hills.  This event continues its decades-long reign as one of Los Angeles’ most famous festive neighborhoods.

Centered around Lubao and Oxnard Streets, this eight-block stretch bursts to life each December with animated decorations, snow machines, music, and glowing candy-themed displays. 

Many residents go all out with synchronized light shows and interactive decorations, turning the area into a lively, walkable celebration. 

Last but not least, is one of our favorites, Sleepy Hollow Christmas Lights Extravaganza in Torrance.  This neighborhood offers one of the most spectacular residential light displays in Southern California.

Nearly every home participates,displaying incredible and creative decorations.  Visitors can walk or drive through the glowing streets while sipping hot cocoa sold by local families.

3 – Holidays at the Theme Parks

Description:

When it comes to festive celebrations, SoCal theme parks know how to outshine even the most dazzling tree. Each December, these parks transform into immersive holiday destinations filled with music, lights, and a little bit of movie magic.

At Knott’s Merry Farm in Buena Park, guests are invited until January 4th, to enjoy a cozy, storybook atmosphere. Stroll through Ghost Town as snowflakes fall every evening, browse booths in the Christmas Crafts Village, and catch live performances like “Home for the Holidays” and “A Calico Christmas Carol.”

Also the Festival of Holidays at Disney California Adventure fills the air with music, cultural celebrations, and seasonal foods from around the world. 

Over in Valencia, Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Holiday in the Park brings thrill rides and millions of twinkling lights together for an electric evening experience, complete with holiday music zones, festive treats, and giant size ornaments decorating the midway.

5 – Amazing Holiday Boat Parades

Few holiday traditions capture Southern California’s coastal charm like its dazzling boat parades. Each December, local harbors display floating festivals of light. 

Expect to see fantastic yachts, sailboats, and tugboats decked in glittering decorations.  Here are our recommendations.

At the L.A. Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade, taking place on Saturday, December 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., the Port of Los Angeles once again hosts its time-honored celebration.

This beloved San Pedro tradition features elaborately illuminated boats cruising the main channel, each creatively interpreting the annual theme.  

Enjoy the show from prime viewing spots such as Banning’s Landing, California Yacht Marina, and West Harbor at the newly reimagined San Pedro waterfront. 

The celebration continues the following weekend with the Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade, set for Saturday, December 13, at Burton Chace Park.

Now in its 63rd year, this beloved event begins with a brilliant fireworks show at 5:45 p.m., followed by the parade from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Dozens of boats light up the marina, each one themed and choreographed to music.

This year’s theme, “A Nightmare Before Christmas,” promises creative, whimsical displays that merge holiday cheer with a touch of Tim Burton-style imagination.

1 – Boo at the LA Zoo

Description:

The Los Angeles Zoo transforms into a Halloween playground with its annual “Boo at the LA Zoo” event, on Saturday and Sunday, October 18/19 and Saturday and Sunday, October 25/26. This family-friendly celebration is perfect for kids of all ages. Expect trick-or-treat stations scattered throughout the zoo, hands-on crafts, and animal encounters with a spooky twist.

Between candy stops, families can learn about “creepy, crawly” creatures and attend special keeper talks that focus on nocturnal animals and those with spooky reputations.

Costumes are encouraged, so kids can show off their Halloween spirit while meeting animals up close. This is such a great event for families.

Also, FYI for the fifth straight year, the L.A. Zoo is partnering with Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center for the Arts & Education to bring back the award-winning Beloved Pets Ofrenda. This special event honors the memory of cherished animal companions that have passed away, and all Zoo guests are welcome to participate.

2 – Knott’s Berry Farm

Description:

One of the greatest local family-friendly Halloween destinations is Knott’s Spooky Farm.  Running Thursdays through Sundays, September 25 – October 31, plus Columbus Day (October 13), this beloved event welcomes all to enjoy festive fun.

Little ghouls and goblins can wander through the town of Calico, where the shops and buildings turn into trick-or-treat stations overflowing with sweet treats. Go trick or treat with Snoopy and friends, it is so much fun!

But the fun doesn’t stop with candy! Knott’s Spooky Farm goes all out to make sure kids and parents alike are entertained from morning to afternoon. Families can climb aboard the scary Timber Mountain Log Ride, where playful Halloween twists turn the classic attraction into a spooky adventure.

Over at Camp Snoopy, guests can dive into Spooky Activities with Snoopy and friends, creating magical memories with beloved Peanuts characters dressed in their Halloween best.

Remember to join Linus Van Pelt’s Great Pumpkin Cookie Decorating event.  Lastly, the Calico Mine Stage also comes alive with festive performances that keep the energy high and the Halloween spirit strong.

With so much variety, Knott’s Spooky Farm remains one of the most fantabulous, family-friendly trick-or-treating spots in all of Southern California.

3 – Neighborhood in San Pedro

Description:

For those who prefer a more traditional Halloween night out, San Pedro is a standout city in Los Angeles with some neighborhoods great for trick-or-treating. Every year, residents go all out with elaborate decorations, ranging from haunted houses to street-wide themes.

Entire blocks participate, transforming the area into a festive spectacle that draws crowds from across the city.

Kids will have a blast by the generous candy offerings—many houses hand out full-sized candy bars or creative treats. The community spirit here is unbeatable, with families setting up spooky yard displays, music, and even interactive haunted setups.

This neighborhood is one of my personal favorites, with so many elaborate and creative displays, especially near Averill park, that make trick-or-treating so much fun!

Parking can be tricky, as San Pedro draws a large Halloween crowd. Arrive early, park a few blocks away, and prepare to walk. The payoff is worth it: a fun, immersive trick-or-treating experience where the decorations are just as exciting as the candy.

For families in the South Bay who love the traditional door-to-door adventure, San Pedro should be on your Halloween map.  And don’t forget to trick or treat inside the Marketplace at Crafted, open from 11 am to 6 pm, on October 31st.

4 – Angelino Heights, Historic Charm and Halloween Magic

Description:

If you’re looking for Halloween with a touch of old Los Angeles charm, Angelino Heights is a great place to go. Known for its beautifully preserved Victorian homes, this historic neighborhood feels straight out of a movie set, and during Halloween, it practically becomes one. 

Trick-or-treating in Angelino Heights offers a more intimate neighborhood vibe. The streets are often bustling with costumed families, and the homeowners are known for their generous candy handouts.

1 – Delusion: Harrowing of Hell

This year’s installment, Harrowing of Hell, takes visitors deep into a dark fantasy world where religious folklore collides with psychological horror. The attraction runs after Halloween until November 9th.

Unlike many traditional haunts, Delusion emphasizes interactivity, you may be asked to carry objects, recite lines, or even separate from your group to face your fears alone. This unpredictability is exactly what makes the experience so memorable and terrifying. 

This year, Delusion is also elevating the entire night out with a vastly improved two-story lounge experience. Guests can sip on themed spirits, and food, and enjoy seductive music before or after their journey through the underworld.

2 – Beware the Dark Realm

Description:

This awesome neighborhood haunt in Santa Clarita has the heart and expertise of a professional production.  It’s a free, donation-based haunted house and is famous for drawing huge crowds every year thanks to its jaw-dropping animatronics, chilling props, and spine-tingling atmosphere. 

 This year’s theme for the legendary Haunted House; Beware the Dark Realm is Diary of a Madman – a tribute to the recently passed Ozzy Osbourne and it blends heavy-metal flair with gothic horror.

Enter the world of the Prince of Darkness and begin your descent into various themed landscapes inspired by the music of Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath.

Not only will this year’s event feature multiple themes throughout, but it will also be the haunt’s largest layout to date. With a soundtrack as iconic as the legend himself, you’ll be immersed in the madness from start to finish.

This year’s event is FREE as always, running on October 24th, 25th, 31st, and November 1st from 7:00pm–10:00pm.  Take a ride on this “crazy train” of horror, and experience all the chills and thrills of exploring all the multiple sets.

3 – The Opechee Haunt

Description:

The Opechee Haunt, a Glendale-based community-run project, proves that passion and creativity can create just as many screams as big-budget sets. 

This free neighborhood haunt has grown into a fan-favorite thanks to its detailed sets, innovative storytelling, and dedicated team of scare actors.

Every year, The Opechee Haunt debuts a new theme, often with original characters and storylines that rival professional productions. Guests line up down the street for a chance to enter, and the local buzz is incredible.

It’s one of those hidden gems that makes Halloween in LA so special. While admission is free, donations are encouraged to keep the haunt alive for future seasons.

Parking here is street-only, so be mindful of local driveways and read the posted signs. Arrive early, as the line can stretch long. This experience starts on October 14 until October 31st.  From 7 to 10 p.m.

4 – The House at Haunted Hill

Description:

For those who love a haunted house with a cinematic edge, The House at Haunted Hill in Woodland Hills is like stepping onto a live movie set. This show is a spectacular display of lights, animatronics, projections, and perfectly timed effects. It’s less about jump scares and more about immersing yourself in a ghostly story, making it a standout among LA’s haunted attractions.

This neighborhood tradition has gained a cult following in Woodland Hills. Crowds gather to watch the 20-minute show unfold across the house and front yard, where ghostly figures tell a haunting tale of love, loss, and lingering spirits. The production value is so high, you’ll forget this isn’t a studio-backed performance.

Street parking in the neighborhood is very limited, and it fills up quickly. Many visitors choose ride-share.  This haunt is free and open to anyone who wants to enjoy an elaborate Halloween spectacle.

5 – Rotten Apple 907

Description:

Burbank’s Rotten Apple 907 is another fan-favorite neighborhood created haunt that rivals a Hollywood production in quality. For over 30 years, this volunteer-run attraction has reinvented itself annually with new themes ranging from pirates to carnivals to gothic horror. Guests never know what to expect until they step inside, and that’s part of the magic.

Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted, often benefiting local charities. The heart and dedication poured into Rotten Apple shine through in every set piece, costume, and scare.

It’s proof that community haunts can deliver as many chills as big-name venues. Locals make it a Halloween tradition, returning year after year to see what new nightmares await.

The line for Rotten Apple can be long, but the wait is part of the fun, with themed decorations setting the stage before you even get inside. The nights are October 25th, 26th, 31st and November 1st.

For a family friendly carnival, the La Palma Annual Halloween Carnival is a local favorite. This community-centered event offers games, food booths, costume contests, and safe trick-or-treating for children of all ages.

3 – Dia de Los Muertos Celebrations

Description:

Los Angeles, home to the largest Mexican- American communities in the country, gets ready to celebrate a very special celebration that is Dia de los Muertos.  These events are held in several historic areas in the city, and they display vibrant altars, decorated with flowers, candles, pictures and other special objects, to honor loved ones who had passed away.

One of the marquee celebrations is Día de Los Muertos  at Olvera Street, running October 25 through November 2.  This event organized by the Olvera Street Merchants Association, blends Indigenous, Aztec, Maya, and Catholic rituals into nightly processions, traditional Mayan blessings, “living muertos” costuming, outdoor altars (ofrendas), and rich performances. Festivities run from about 10:00 am to 9:00 pm daily, culminating in special theatrical presentations such as La Danza de la Muerte.

Visit the water front city of San Pedro! The city celebrates its 14th Annual San Pedro Día de los Muertos Festival. Held in historic downtown San Pedro on Sunday, October 26, this free, family-friendly event includes live music and folkloric performances, a beer garden, delicious food vendors, a kids’ craft area, and an altar contest. Locals and visitors are encouraged to dress in Día de los Muertos themes and soak in the sense of community and remembrance that fills the waterfront atmosphere.

Lastly, Downtown LA’s heart will also pulse with remembrance and art at Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Downtown Día de los Muertos, which officially opens on Saturday, October 25 with a ceremony from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
