Rooftop Cinema Club DTLA is one of our favorites. Located on the fourth-floor terrace of the LEVEL hotel in Downtown LA, the theater has comfortable Adirondack chairs and two-person loveseats, wireless headphones and fantastic views of the Downtown skyline. Arrive before the movie and you can order drinks, play lawn games and watch the sunset before settling in for the film.

Hollywood has its own rooftop movie experience at The Montalbán Rooftop Movies. The rooftop sits above the historic Ricardo Montalbán Theatre on Vine Street and combines outdoor movies with wireless headphones, food, drinks and plenty of time to socialize before the screening.

Both are particularly fun for date night or an evening out with friends. Check the current schedule before heading out since movies, admission policies and screening times change throughout the season.

Bring a Blanket to Movies at the Park or Beach

Description:

Sometimes the best outdoor movie night is also the simplest. Pack a blanket, bring some snacks and watch a movie outside with the family.

Cities throughout Los Angeles County host free Movies in the Park programs during the warmer months. Long Beach Movies in the Park is especially fun for families, with free screenings at parks across the city along with activities that can include popcorn, bounce houses and raffle giveaways. Arrive before sunset and make an evening of it before the movie begins.

La Habra Movies in the Park is another family-friendly option, with screenings held at city parks throughout the summer. Pre-movie activities add to the fun, and concessions are typically available for purchase before settling onto your blanket for the film.

For an even more quintessential Southern California experience, take movie night to the sand. Hermosa Movies at the Beach brings free sunset screenings to the beach near the Hermosa Pier. September in Los Angeles may bring the start of a new season, but the sunny, hot weather isn’t going anywhere just yet. Warm days continue throughout the month, making it a great time for outdoor festivals, concerts and weekend adventures.

Keep the sunscreen and hats handy because summer weather in Southern California often sticks around well into fall.

From Labor Day celebrations and food festivals to outdoor concerts and film screenings, September is packed with things to do across LA and the surrounding Southern California communities.

It’s also a great month to enjoy LA’s iconic outdoor venues, including the Hollywood Bowl, before its summer season comes to an end.

At the same time, the first signs of fall start popping up in a very Southern California way. Halloween celebrations begin at the major theme parks, while festivals, cultural events and special performances fill the calendar. Here are some of the best events to enjoy this September.

Labor Day Weekend

Description:

Labor Day weekend brings three days of festivals, outdoor movies and end-of-summer fun to Los Angeles 

One of the best choices is Fiesta Hermosa, returning to downtown Hermosa Beach from September 5th through 7th. This longtime beachside celebration fills the area with live music, a Makers Mercado, food vendors and a mini carnival. Admission to the main festival areas is free, making it an easy outing for families and groups of friends.

For an only-in-LA Labor Day evening, head to Cinespia at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The popular outdoor movie series presents Josie and the Pussycats on September 5th and The Sandlot on September 6th. Bring a picnic and settle onto the lawn for a movie under the stars, complete with DJs and Cinespia’s popular photo booth.

Classic movie fans can also check out the 62nd Cinecon Classic Film Festival, taking place September 3rd through 7th at the Landmark Nuart Theatre. This longtime Labor Day tradition celebrates classic and rarely seen films, with screenings and special programs throughout the holiday weekend.

Yes, we love lobster! The Original Lobster Festival returns to Fountain Valley Sports Park from September 11th to 13th. Fresh Maine lobsters are flown in daily and steamed onsite in the festival’s enormous lobster cooker.

Lobster may be the star, but there is plenty more to enjoy. The festival includes an international food court, live music, dancing, karaoke, carnival rides and games, magic shows and activities for kids. There are also wine, tequila and whiskey tastings for adults.

Next, visit Taste of Arcadia, returning to Santa Anita Park on September 19th. This popular Arcadia Chamber of Commerce event brings together restaurants and food vendors from Arcadia and throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

Come hungry and spend the day sampling food and drinks while enjoying entertainment and exploring the Business Showcase.

Art, Film, Music and Cultural Events

Description:

Start with The Other Art Fair, returning to the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica from September 24th to 27th. Presented by Saatchi Art, the fair showcases 160 independent artists and thousands of original artworks, including paintings, photography, sculpture and mixed media. Visitors can meet artists directly while enjoying immersive installations, performances and DJs.

Also new this year is the first Los Angeles Korean Film Festival, taking place September 24th to 26th at the Harmony Gold Preview House and Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles.

The inaugural festival celebrates contemporary Korean cinema through screenings and special programs. Its theme, New Waves, New Voices, focuses on fresh perspectives and emerging voices in Korean filmmaking. All screenings and programs are free and open to the public.

Later in the month, enjoy a weekend of music by the ocean at the Ohana Festival, returning to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point from September 25th to 27th.

More than 35 performances take place across three stages, with a 2026 lineup that includes Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder, Tyler Childers, Maná, Alabama Shakes, Jon Batiste, Fontaines D.C. and Pixies.

September also marks the beginning of Oktoberfest season. Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest begins September 12th, Old World Oktoberfest in Huntington Beach begins September 13th, and the Lake Arrowhead Oktoberfest starts September 19th. Expect German food, beer, live music and plenty of traditional Oktoberfest festivities.

A Night at the Hollywood Bowl

Description:

September offers one last chance to enjoy summer nights at one of LA’s most iconic outdoor venues.

Maestro of the Movies: A Tribute to John Williams comes to the Hollywood Bowl September 4th through 6th. The concert celebrates the legendary composer behind some of Hollywood’s most recognizable movie scores, with selections from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Jaws, Jurassic Park and more. The music is accompanied by specially edited film scenes and clips shown on the Bowl’s big screens.

The following weekend brings another favorite Hollywood Bowl tradition. OneRepublic headlines the Fireworks Finale on September 11th and 12th. Hear hits including “Counting Stars” and “I Ain’t Worried” before the evening finishes with the Bowl’s famous fireworks lighting up the Hollywood sky.

Halloween Events at Your Favorite Theme Parks

Halloween starts early in Southern California, and September brings the transformation of some of the region’s biggest theme parks.

At Disneyland Resort, Halloween Time runs from August 21st through October 31st, bringing seasonal decorations, themed attractions, special treats and entertainment. The popular Oogie Boogie Bash also takes place on select nights throughout September at Disney California Adventure, with immersive treat trails, Disney villains and special Halloween entertainment.

For those seeking more intense chills, Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood takes over the park on select nights from September 3rd through November 1st. Prepare to navigate elaborate haunted houses, scare zones and the famous Terror Tram.

Finally, Knott’s Scary Farm returns on select nights from September 17th through October 31st. Southern California’s longest-running Halloween theme park event transforms Knott’s Berry Farm with haunted mazes, scare zones, sinister shows and more than 1,000 creatures lurking throughout the fog-filled park.

1 – Santa Monica Farmers Market

The Downtown Santa Monica Farmers Market is one of the most respected produce markets in Los Angeles County and a particularly good choice for serious home cooks and anyone interested in exceptional California-grown ingredients.

The market takes place on Arizona Avenue on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., year-round and rain or shine.

The Wednesday market, established in 1981, features more than 60 California farms and is recognized by the City of Santa Monica as one of the largest and most diverse Certified Farmers Markets in the country.

Wednesday is especially noteworthy because the market has become a regular shopping destination for the culinary community.

According to the City of Santa Monica, many of Los Angeles’ best-known chefs and restaurants shop at the Wednesday market, alongside local residents, visitors and even celebrities.

The selection changes with California’s growing seasons, giving shoppers access to everything from stone fruit, berries and citrus to tomatoes, greens, herbs and other specialty produce directly from growers.

Saturday offers a slightly different experience. It has more than 40 farm stands and the largest percentage of certified organic growers among Santa Monica’s four farmers markets.

The market takes place every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. during spring, summer and fall, including August, and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. during winter.

Located near the South Pasadena Metro A Line station, the market brings certified California-grown produce into the city’s walkable downtown area.

There is plenty here for shoppers, including berries, stone fruit, citrus, avocados, vegetables, mushrooms, meat, eggs, artisan cheese, honey and flowers from California farms and producers.

But you don’t have to come simply to fill your grocery bags. The market also has an extensive selection of hot and prepared foods, with current vendors offering choices such as rotisserie chicken, Korean food, pupusas, roasted corn, pizza, tamales, crepes, Mediterranean food, oysters and other ready-to-eat dishes.

That combination turns Thursday market night into an easy dinner outing. Shop for produce, pick up something hot to eat and stay for the live music that accompanies the market.

The South Pasadena Farmers Market has operated since 1999 and is managed by the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.

The Torrance Certified Farmers Market is one of the strongest farmers market destinations in the South Bay, particularly when it comes to variety. Held at Wilson Park every Tuesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the year-round market brings together a substantial roster of California farms alongside prepared food and specialty vendors.

The Wilson Park location is another advantage, with a large parking lot that offers considerably more parking than you’ll find at many farmers market locations around LA County.

The selection of growers is one of the biggest reasons to come, with seasonal California fruits and vegetables from an extensive roster of farms.

But don’t overlook the dairy and eggs. The selection here is excellent, with fresh eggs and locally produced dairy products, including some seriously good yogurt and butter.

Combined with citrus, stone fruit, dates, berries, vegetables and other seasonal produce, Torrance is the kind of market where you can do a substantial amount of your weekly food shopping rather than leaving with just a few specialty items.

Come hungry to the Mar Vista Farmers Market. Held every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grand View and Venice Boulevard, this Westside market combines a substantial collection of California farmers with one of the most interesting prepared food selections on our list.

The market operates year-round, rain or shine, except for major holidays.

The farm selection alone makes Mar Vista worth visiting. Its current roster includes dozens of producers such as Arnett Farms, County Line Harvest, Cuyama Orchards, John Givens Organics, Sunrise Organic Farm, Tamai Family Farms, Tenerelli Orchards and Weiser Family Farms.

If you’re looking for one of the biggest all-around farmers market experiences in Los Angeles, start with Hollywood. The Hollywood Farmers Market takes over the area around Ivar and Selma avenues every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Founded in 1991, it has grown into what its operator, Food Access LA, describes as the largest farmers market in Los Angeles, with more than 150 farmers, producers, food vendors and artisans. The City of Los Angeles currently lists the market at approximately 160 participating farmers, producers and food artisans.

The size translates into an impressive range of things to buy. Current producers include Weiser Family Farms, Underwood Family Farms, Tamai Farms, Sunrise Organic Farm, Arnett Farms and many others offering seasonal fruit, vegetables, Asian greens, berries, mushrooms, eggs, meat, cheese, seafood, bread, flowers and specialty agricultural products.

Southern California chefs are among the regular shoppers, but the market is equally accessible to anyone who simply wants great ingredients for the week ahead.

Hollywood is also one of the easiest markets on this list to turn into a food outing. Its extensive prepared food selection currently ranges from pupusas, arepas and dumplings to Hawaiian chicken, Thai food, breakfast burritos, crepes, pizza, pastries, oysters, bagels and tamales.

Live music, children’s activities and occasional food-related book signings add another dimension to the Sunday market.

1 – Jerome C. Daniel Overlook (Mulholland Drive)

Description:

High above Los Angeles along the famous curves of Mulholland Drive, the Jerome C. Daniel Overlook offers some of the most impressive panoramic views in the city. This drive-up viewpoint makes it easy to experience the Hollywood Hills without a hike.

Simply pull into the overlook, step out of your car, and take in sweeping views across the Los Angeles Basin, with Downtown Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Mountains, and other familiar landmarks visible on clear days.

The overlook is one of the best places in Los Angeles to watch the sunset and stay for the city lights afterward. As the sun sinks below the horizon, the sky shifts through shades of gold, orange, and pink before thousands of lights begin to illuminate the neighborhoods below.

The change from daylight to night creates two completely different views from the same location, making it easy to spend an hour or more here.

Jerome C. Daniel Overlook is also one of the best places along Mulholland Drive to photograph the Hollywood Sign and the surrounding hills. The spacious overlook provides plenty of room to set up for wide-angle landscape shots or frame the skyline with the Hollywood Hills in the foreground.

Because it is one of the most popular stops along the Mulholland Scenic Parkway, the parking area often fills up around sunset, so arriving a little early gives you the best chance of getting a space.

2 – Hilltop Park (Signal Hill)

Description:

Hilltop Park at Signal Hill offers one of the broadest panoramic views you can find anywhere in Los Angeles County. From the summit, the landscape extends in nearly every direction, creating a fantastic 360 degree viewpoint that few other sunset destinations can match.

On clear evenings, you can see Downtown Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Mountains, the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island, and the Port of Long Beach from the same hilltop.

Street parking is available along Skyline Drive just below the park, followed by a short walk to the summit. The open grassy hill and paved pathways provide plenty of space to enjoy the changing views from different directions, making it easy to spend time here before and after sunset. 

Also, Hilltop Park is only a few minutes from many of Long Beach’s best restaurants, making it easy to pair an evening at the overlook with dinner afterward.

1 – Mother’s Beach

Description:

The undisputed number one spot to paddleboard for the majority of Westside locals is Mother’s Beach Marina del Rey.  Of course we won’t argue with our audience, this destination has been put at the top for several reasons.  

Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey is one of the best places for paddleboarding near Los Angeles, especially for beginners and families. The calm, flat water creates ideal conditions for first-time paddlers, kids, and anyone looking for a relaxing day on the water.

Families can launch directly from the sandy beach and spend hours exploring the marina while enjoying views of sailboats, wildlife, and the waterfront.

One of the biggest advantages of paddling here is the easy access to rentals and lessons. Local outfitters such as Pro SUP Shop operate directly from Mother’s Beach and offer paddleboard rentals, beginner lessons, guided tours, and sunset paddles. 

The calm harbor also makes Mother’s Beach a fantastic place to try paddleboard yoga. Stable water conditions make balance poses much easier than they would be in the open ocean.
