Los Angeles is known for unique neighborhoods all with their own feel and personality. Highland Park is the place to go when you are looking for inspiration and true LA vibes.

Creativity, flavor, and culture come together here, making it one of the most exciting and vibrant neighborhoods to explore.

Along York Boulevard and Figueroa Street, new cafés, restaurants, art spaces, and pop ups continue to shape the neighborhood’s energy.

It is easy to build an entire day here, moving from coffee to shopping to art, all within a walkable stretch. Highland Park offers a fresh and inspiring look at what is happening in Los Angeles.

Great Restaurants and Coffee

Description:

Highland Park’s food scene is diverse and delicious.  For casual Taiwanese bite head over to Joy on York, their dan dan noodles and dumplings have made this one of the busiest and most talked about spots in the area.

If looking for an elevated yet relaxed experience go to Hippo. Here you will find a modern Italian approach, featuring seasonal dishes and house made pasta that keep the menu feeling fresh.

And for something quicker, Triple Beam Pizza is known for its Roman style pizza served by weight, offering a casual but thoughtfully crafted option.

Highland Park features a serious coffee culture.  Enjoy standout spots like Santa Canela, by the way canela means cinnamon in Spanish, so you know the flavors here are amazing.

Santa Canela sets the tone for rich, comforting flavors with its lineup of delicious coffee, specialty teas, and freshly baked goods made in small batches, including seasonal pastries and curated pastry boxes that regulars can subscribe to monthly, while signature drinks like the burnt cinnamon latte and café de olla make it especially memorable.

Another great coffee spot is Lumen Coffee on Figueroa. This espresso bar and roastery pairs excellent coffee with a strong visual identity, featuring a uniquely designed outdoor space with decorated walls and a welcoming patio that has become a favorite for photos.  Lumen Coffee ensures a high level of craft in every cup.

Art, Galleries, and Creative Spaces

Description:

Take a picture of the areas unofficial mascot Chicken Boy. This all time famous 22 foot tall statue, sometimes called “LA’s Statue of Liberty”,  still stands as a landmark in Highland Park, and it continues to make funny and creative appearances in many visitors’ photos.

Along York Boulevard, gallery openings and informal art walks bring multiple spaces to life in the evenings. Small galleries, creative studios, and pop up exhibits often stay open late, creating a walkable stretch where you can move from one space to another and see a range of styles in one night.

Murals and public art add another layer to Highland Park’s visual culture, turning everyday streets into an open air gallery. Large scale, colorful murals can be found throughout the area, especially around York Boulevard and Figueroa Street, with new pieces appearing regularly and older ones evolving over time.

Visit Highland Park and discover a new favorite coffee drink or create a mural inspired collage for your Instagram. Have fun, everyone.

Welcome to your ultimate guide to exploring Los Angeles this June! As the Southern California sunshine settles into its perfect summer rhythm, the city comes alive with an eclectic mix of outdoor energy, community celebrations, and world-class entertainment.

This month offers a spectacular lineup of events designed to get you out and exploring.

From the iconic shores of Santa Monica to the historic grounds of the LA Coliseum, June 2026 is all about gathering together and making the most of the vibrant local atmosphere.

In this guide, we’ve rounded up the absolute best family-friendly activities, cultural festivals, and weekend destinations to help you map out the perfect early-summer itinerary.

1 – Top Family Festivals

Description:

June is packed with family-friendly events here in LA, so let’s get right to it! Soccer fans can head to the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the FIFA Fan Festival, where families can watch World Cup matches on giant screens while enjoying live entertainment, food, and interactive activities tied to the 2026 tournament.

The festival transforms Los Angeles into a major gathering spot for soccer fans from around the world and adds an exciting international energy to the city this summer.  Check the website for dates and seats.

Families looking for meaningful cultural celebrations can also explore Juneteenth events happening throughout the region. In Long Beach, several community celebrations are planned with live music, art, storytelling, food vendors, and family activities honoring Black history and culture.

Events at places like Aquarium of the Pacific and local community festivals create opportunities for both education and celebration during the holiday weekend.

To close out the month, families can head to the legendary Santa Monica Pier on June 27 and 28, for the Santa Monica Pier 360 Beach Festival. This free all-ages event celebrates classic Southern California beach culture with ocean sports competitions, live music, skating, games, food vendors, and kid-friendly activities right along the coast.

With summer weather, ocean views, and nonstop entertainment, it is one of the best family outings in Los Angeles this June.

2 – Top Free Events and Activities

Description:

Go outside and explore the city, enjoy these awesome and free family activities.

One of the best events of the month is KCRW Summer Nights at Kidspace Children’s Museum on June 27 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Families can enjoy free evening admission filled with live DJs, dancing, interactive art activities, food trucks, and outdoor play throughout the museum’s colorful campus.

These KCRW summer events have become one of LA’s favorite seasonal traditions because they combine music, culture, and family-friendly entertainment in some of Southern California’s most unique locations.

Another must-do free experience this month is Free Day at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens on Thursday, June 4. Visitors can explore the world-famous botanical gardens, art collections, and library grounds completely free with advance reservations.

Summer is one of the best times to visit the lush Japanese Garden, Desert Garden, and rose collections while enjoying one of Southern California’s most beautiful cultural destinations.

Tickets are limited and typically disappear quickly once reservations open, so planning ahead is essential for this popular monthly free-admission event.

Families with younger kids should also add LAist’s Super-Fun Saturday at Autry Museum of the American West on Saturday, June 14 to their calendar.

This free family festival includes multilingual story times, live performances, music, bubbles, lawn games, crafts, puppets, and interactive activities designed especially for young children.

Located inside Griffith Park, the event creates a playful outdoor atmosphere where families can spend the entire day exploring one of LA’s most iconic cultural spaces while enjoying free entertainment and hands-on activities.

3 – Father’s Day Celebrations

Description:

Celebrate Father’s Day with a waterfront family outing at the Aquarium of the Pacific Father’s Day BBQ in Long Beach. Families can enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch served outdoors on the Veranda dining area overlooking beautiful Rainbow Harbor before spending the afternoon exploring the Aquarium’s incredible marine exhibits.

Fathers also receive a complimentary beer or soft drink during the experience. Reservations are offered from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with each dining reservation lasting one hour, making this a relaxed and memorable way to celebrate Dad while enjoying one of Southern California’s most scenic waterfront destinations

Is dad a soccer fan? LA Galaxy invites all families to celebrate with the special Father’s Day package which includes a fun match-day experience with exclusive perks and gifts designed especially for dads. It’s an exciting way to spend the day together while enjoying the energy of one of LA’s biggest sports teams.

Turn Father’s Day into a full backyard party this year with Let’s Hibachi, the at-home dining experience that brings the chef, sizzling grill, entertainment, and sake directly to you.

Instead of sitting in a crowded restaurant, families can gather outside for a fun interactive dinner filled with fire tricks, fried rice, laughter, and restaurant-style hibachi cooking right in the backyard.

One of the best parts is that you can invite as many family members and friends as your space allows, making it perfect for larger Father’s Day celebrations, multi-generational gatherings, or simply turning Dad’s special day into an unforgettable summer party at home.

There is something special about a playground by the ocean. It is not just about slides and swings, it is about the feeling of fresh air, the sound of waves, and the freedom kids experience when carefree play meets the coastline.

In this guide, we are highlighting some of the best beach playgrounds near LA. Each one offers its own mix of scenery, thoughtful design, and family friendly features that make it worth the visit.

From creative themed play areas to wide open coastal parks and calm beaches perfect for younger children, these locations go beyond a simple stop and become full day destinations. We hope you add them all to your personal list of favorites!

1 – North Beach Playground Santa Monica

Description:

This great beach playground is located right along the shoreline of Santa Monica State Beach, and it offers a refreshing take on what a beach playground can be. The designed space blends ocean views, fresh coastal air, and modern play structures into one inviting destination for families.

The playground itself is designed with inclusivity and imagination at its core. As one of Santa Monica’s universally accessible playgrounds, it features barrier-free equipment, wide pathways, and sensory elements that allow children of all abilities to play together comfortably.

North Beach Playground includes separate areas for younger children and older kids, along with climbing structures, slides, swings, and interactive features that engage touch, sound, and movement.

From sound columns to tactile play elements, every detail is designed to encourage exploration, mobility, and creativity in a safe, welcoming environment.

Even beyond the playground, this location makes it easy to turn a simple outing into a full beach day. Families can transition seamlessly from playtime to the sand, take a walk along the oceanfront path, or relax on nearby benches while soaking in the coastal atmosphere.

Location:810 CA-1, Santa Monica, CA 90403

2 – Recreation Park Long Beach

Description:

Tucked into the heart of Long Beach, Recreation Park offers a refreshing blend of open space, family-friendly amenities, and one of the most imaginative playgrounds in the area.

Spanning over 200 acres, this expansive park invites visitors to slow down and spend the day outdoors, whether that means stretching out on the grass, strolling shaded pathways, or gathering for a casual picnic.

The highlight for many families is the recently updated dinosaur-themed playground, designed to spark curiosity and active play.

Children can climb on dinosaur structures, dig for fossils in the “Dino Excavation Zone,” and enjoy swings, slides, and spinning features that keep them moving and engaged.

The playground also includes accessible elements like inclusive swings and American Sign Language panels, making it welcoming for a wide range of abilities.

Surrounding the play area, grassy lawns and trees create a relaxed setting where parents can sit, picnic, and watch the adventure unfold.

Beyond the playground, the park offers much more to turn a simple visit into a full day out. Recreation Park features golf courses, a dog park, tennis facilities, baseball fields, and even a casting pond, along with community spaces that host events and gatherings throughout the year.

Location: 4900 E 7th St, Long Beach, CA 90804

3 – Cabrillo Beach ocean-themed playground

Description:

Our next recommendation is Cabrillo Beach ocean-themed playground.  This is a hidden gem that turns a simple outing into a full coastal experience. The play space sits just steps from the sand, offering families a relaxed and inviting place to spend the day.

With ocean breezes, open skies, and a laid-back harbor atmosphere, it’s the kind of destination that encourages you to slow down and enjoy time together.

The playground itself is designed to reflect its coastal surroundings, with ocean-inspired elements that spark imagination and active play.

Children can climb, slide, and explore while parents relax nearby, all within view of the water. Just a short walk away, the historic Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse adds character to the setting, while the nearby Cabrillo Marine Aquarium offers an enriching stop for curious minds.

Admission to The aquarium is always free, with donations encouraged, making it easy to add an educational experience to your visit without planning ahead.

While you’re in the area, it’s well worth exploring more of what San Pedro has to offer. Head over to White Point Blufftop Park for sweeping ocean views and a peaceful coastal walk, then continue down to White Point Royal Palms Beach where tide pools reveal a fascinating world of marine life during low tide.

Together, these spots create a perfect day trip filled with play, exploration, and coastal beauty.

Location:3720 Stephen M. White Dr., San Pedro, CA 90731

4 – Marina del Rey – Mother’s Beach Playground

Description:

Marina del Rey offers one of the most family friendly beach playground experiences in Los Angeles. Unlike traditional ocean beaches, this protected lagoon creates a peaceful setting with gentle, shallow water that is perfect for younger children and relaxed beach days.

Just steps from the sand, the playground invites kids to climb, slide, and explore while parents settle into nearby picnic areas, making it easy to spend hours here without feeling rushed.

The playground itself blends seamlessly into the beach environment, surrounded by palm trees, open space, and soft sand underfoot.

Families will find everything they need for a comfortable outing, including picnic tables, barbecue areas, restrooms, and shaded spots for relaxing between play sessions.

Recent improvements have made the space even more welcoming, adding modern amenities and accessibility features that enhance the overall experience.

The result is a space that feels both simple and thoughtfully designed, where kids can move freely and adults can truly unwind.

Beyond the playground, Marina Beach opens the door to a variety of fun, easygoing water activities that make this spot especially memorable.

Windsurfing and kayaking are popular here thanks to the calm harbor conditions, offering families a chance to try something new in a safe and approachable setting.

Location: 4101 Admiralty Way Marina del Rey CA 90292

5 – Veteran’s Park Playground, Redondo Beach

Description:

Veterans Park is a unique place that brings together history, ocean views, and everyday community life. This long standing park has been a gathering place for generations, offering wide grassy spaces that overlook the Pacific and invite families to slow down and take it all in.

Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning for a familiar weekend outing, there is a sense of tradition here that makes the experience feel special.

For families, the playground is a central highlight, giving children a place to climb, run, and play just steps from the ocean. Nearby, open lawns create the perfect setting for picnics, casual games, or simply relaxing under the coastal sky.

The park also features outdoor fitness equipment blending recreation with wellness in a natural setting. It is easy to spend hours here moving between the playground, the grass, and the ocean views without ever feeling the need to leave.

Veterans Park also invites visitors to enjoy a variety of community events. From colorful kite gatherings that fill the sky to local celebrations that bring neighbors together, the park has a vibrant, welcoming energy that goes beyond its physical features.

Did we mention it is right next to the Redondo Beach Pier? You can bike or walk over to explore great restaurants and shops. This park is truly a gem for everyone.

5 – Memorial Day Celebrations

Description:

Our first recommendation is Los Angeles Fleet Week in San Pedro.  This awesome event stands out as the biggest Memorial Day celebration in Southern California. From May 23 to 25, visitors can explore active-duty ships, enjoy tours of the iconic Battleship USS Iowa, and take part in a full lineup of activities including military displays, live music, exhibits, food trucks, and family-friendly entertainment.

Another great coastal event is Fiesta Hermosa on May 23 to 25. With easy park-and-ride access, bike valet, and rideshare drop-offs, it’s designed for a smooth, carefree day by the ocean.

For something a little more eclectic, Topanga Days adds a creative, community-driven twist with live music, artisan vendors, and a laid-back canyon atmosphere—making it another beloved tradition to round out the holiday weekend.

Topanga Days is a local tradition that blends live music, community spirit, and a slightly bohemian vibe that feels true to the area. The lineup of bands keeps things lively throughout the weekend, and the famous parade adds a fun, small town feel that is hard to find anywhere else in LA.

There is also a big fun list of games and activities for all ages, plus plenty of food and artisan vendors to explore.

We hope you enjoy all of these events and activities, and that you have a wonderful time exploring everything Los Angeles has to offer this month.

Palos Verdes scenic drive

Spring is one of the most rewarding times to take a scenic drive and explore Southern California. The blooming wildflowers, and clear skies make every view energizing.

From coastal highways to mountain ridgelines and quiet canyon roads, the season brings out all beauty and color. It is the perfect time to slow down, take a scenic route, and enjoy the natural beauty that unfolds along the way.

In this guide, we have gathered some of the best scenic drives for spring across California, each offering a unique perspective of the season.

Some routes highlight ocean views and coastal cliffs, while others take you through rolling hills, open valleys, or flower-filled landscapes that only appear for a short time each year.  We hope you’ll love them all!

1 – Pacific Coast Highway (Santa Monica → Malibu)

Description:

The Pacific Coast Highway drive from Santa Monica to Malibu is one of the most accessible and rewarding coastal routes in Southern California, covering roughly 15–20 miles along Highway 1 with uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean.

As you leave Santa Monica and pass through Pacific Palisades, the scenery shifts quickly and urban edges give way to open coastline, sandy beaches, and dramatic bluffs.

Spring is arguably the most magical time to experience this route. Following the winter rains, the usually golden hillsides undergo a vibrant transformation into a lush, emerald green. It is the peak season for coastal wildflowers; you’ll see blankets of bright yellow giant coreopsis, purple lupine, and the iconic orange California poppy spilling down the bluffs toward the sand.

The air is crisp and clear, and often free from the thick “June Gloom” fog that can obscure the horizon in early summer. The mild temperatures are perfect for rolling down the windows to catch the scent of salt spray and blooming jasmine.

To ensure your drive is a serene escape rather than a test of patience, timing is everything. On weekdays, you’ll want to avoid the “commuter crush” by staying off the PCH between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM (heading south toward LA) and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM (heading north toward Malibu).

For the ultimate experience, aim for a mid-week late morning or a Sunday afternoon about two hours before sunset.

This “Golden Hour” window not only provides the smoothest traffic flow but also bathes the cliffs in a warm, honey-hued light that makes the spring colors pop against the deep blue sea.

Location: Pacific Coast Highway (Santa Monica → Malibu) CA-1

2 – Mulholland Drive (Hollywood Hills Ridgeline)

Description:

Our next recommendation is Mulholland Drive.  It is one of Los Angeles’ most iconic scenic routes, following the ridgeline of the Hollywood Hills with sweeping views of the city on one side and the San Fernando Valley on the other.

Stretching for more than 20 miles, the drive connects areas near the Hollywood Bowl to the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains, offering multiple scenic overlooks along the way.

Popular stops such as the Hollywood Bowl Overlook, Universal City Overlook, and several smaller vista points provide easy access to panoramic views without requiring long hikes.

The road itself is narrow and winding in sections, which encourages a slower pace and makes the experience feel more intentional and immersive.

Spring is one of the best times to explore Mulholland Drive because the surrounding hills are at their most vibrant. Seasonal greenery covers the hillsides, and native wildflowers appear in patches along the ridgeline and nearby trails.

Visibility is often better than in summer, when haze can soften the skyline, so on clear spring days you can see across the Los Angeles Basin, downtown skyline, and even out toward the Pacific Ocean.

Stop for great pics! The Hollywood Bowl Overlook is one of the most accessible spots for photos, offering a clear view of the Hollywood Bowl, downtown Los Angeles, and the surrounding hills.

For a different perspective, the Universal City Overlook provides a sweeping view of the San Fernando Valley, especially striking on clear spring days.

If you would like to pair the drive with a relaxed break, consider starting or ending your route near Studio City, where you will find well-regarded local coffee shops and casual cafés just minutes from the eastern entrance to Mulholland.

Approaching the drive this way turns it into a more complete outing, with a balance of scenic viewpoints and comfortable places to pause and enjoy the setting.

Location:7036 Mulholland Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90068

3 – Topanga Canyon → Malibu Canyon Loop

Description:

Another excellent scenic drive to add to your spring list is the Topanga Canyon to Malibu Canyon Loop, a route that offers a completely different perspective of Southern California.

Instead of following the coastline, this drive takes you through the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains, where winding canyon roads connect Topanga Canyon Boulevard with Malibu Canyon Road.

The loop typically begins inland near Woodland Hills or the San Fernando Valley, climbs through Topanga Canyon, and then descends toward the coast before circling back through Malibu Canyon.

The entire route can be completed in about one to two hours depending on stops, but the variety of landscapes makes it feel like a much longer journey.

Spring is when this loop truly stands out. The hills are covered in fresh green vegetation, and seasonal wildflowers appear along the roadside and throughout nearby parks such as Topanga State Park.

Cooler temperatures make the drive more comfortable, especially since much of the route does not have direct ocean breezes.

You will notice a refreshing shift in scenery as you move between shaded canyon sections, open ridgelines, and wide valley views. Wildlife is also more active in spring, so it is not uncommon to spot birds, deer, or other native species along quieter stretches of the road.

One of the highlights of this loop is the opportunity to stop in the small community of Topanga, which has long been known for its artistic and bohemian character.

A fun fact is that Topanga Canyon has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and music videos because of its distinctive rugged landscape and secluded feel.

For a relaxed break, local cafés in Topanga offer a convenient place to pause before continuing toward Malibu. As a simple tip, consider driving the loop in a clockwise direction so that you descend into Malibu Canyon with wider, more open views ahead of you.

This approach not only enhances the visual experience but also makes it easier to access scenic pullouts along the way.

Location: Topanga Canyon → Malibu Canyon Loop

4 – Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve Drive

Description:

Our next recommendation is the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve Drive, one of the most seasonal and visually striking experiences in California. Located near Lancaster, this drive centers around the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve and the surrounding rural roads that weave through the high desert.

Unlike coastal or canyon drives, this route offers wide open views of rolling hills that can transform into vibrant fields of orange during peak bloom. The drive itself is flexible, allowing you to explore nearby roads at your own pace while stopping at designated viewpoints and trailheads throughout the reserve.

Spring is the defining season for this drive, typically between March and early May, when California poppies bloom depending on rainfall and temperature conditions.

In strong bloom years, the hills appear almost painted in bright orange, with additional wildflowers such as lupine and goldfields adding layers of color.

A helpful tip is that poppies tend to open in the late morning and early afternoon when temperatures rise, so timing your visit between about 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM often provides the most vibrant views.

Wind is also a common factor in this area, so calmer days usually offer the best conditions for photography and walking the trails.

The reserve is one of the most reliable places to see California poppies in large numbers during bloom season. For the best experience, plan to stop at the visitor center for current bloom updates and then take one of the short loop trails that lead directly into the fields.

This drive is about experiencing a natural event that only appears for a short window each year.

Location: Antelope Valley Poppy reserve Drive 93536

5 –Palos Verdes Peninsula Coastal Drive

Description:

Our last recommendation is one of the most intimate and quietly stunning coastal drives in Southern California. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Coastal Drive offers a refreshing contrast to busier beach routes, following the edge of the peninsula through Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates.

Along the way, you will find elevated ocean views, and dramatic cliffs. Key stops include the iconic Point Vicente Lighthouse and the coastal viewpoints near Terranea Resort, both offering excellent vantage points for photos and short walks along the bluffs.

Which plants are native to this area? Expect to see patches of yellow mustard flowers, and clusters of purple lupine adding soft color against the green spring vegetation.

The area is also rich in coastal sage scrub, a native plant community that comes to life in spring. This includes plants like California sagebrush, black sage, and white sage, many of which produce small, fragrant blooms.

These plants are not only visually appealing but also release a light, earthy scent that becomes more noticeable on warm days. Along the cliffs and open spaces, you may also see buckwheat and toyons, which contribute texture and seasonal color to the landscape.

The coastal vegetation is fresh and green, and visibility is often clearer in Spring time when temperatures are mild, making it comfortable to step out at overlooks or walk along nearby coastal trails.

It is also a great season for spotting marine life, including migrating gray whales that pass along the coast during late winter and early spring.

The Point Vicente Lighthouse has been featured in numerous films and television productions due to its classic coastal setting. For a simple way to enhance your visit, consider planning a few intentional stops along the route, as there are several scenic spots perfect for a quiet break overlooking the ocean.

This drive lends itself beautifully to a short pause for stretching, a peaceful moment of meditation, or capturing photos along the bluffs.

We hope you add this scenic drive, along with the others in this guide, to your list of spring experiences in Southern California.

Location: Palos Verdes Peninsula Coastal Drive 90275

3 – Best Festivals in Los Angeles in April

Description:

April brings a wide variety of events celebrating everything from craft beer and literature to environmental awareness. Across the city, parks, university campuses, and creative venues host lively gatherings that draw locals and visitors alike.

One of the most popular events for adults is the LA Beer Fest, taking place April 4, 2026 at LA Center Studios. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the festival, which features more than 80 breweries and over 200 different beers available for tasting.

General admission tickets include unlimited tastings, while VIP options provide perks such as access to exclusive beers and a lounge area.

For a completely different kind of festival, book lovers won’t want to miss the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, happening April 18–19 on the University of Southern California campus. This event features hundreds of authors, panel discussions, book signings, exhibitor booths, and storytelling events for children.

General admission to the festival is free, making it a fantastic cultural outing where readers can discover new books, meet writers, and explore one of LA’s most vibrant literary gatherings.

4 – Spring Blooms at the Botanical Gardens

Description:

April is one of the most beautiful months of the year to visit Los Angeles’ botanical gardens, when spring flowers reach their peak and many landscapes burst into color. Instead of chasing the unpredictable wildflower “superbloom,” many garden experts recommend enjoying the entire spring bloom season, when a wide range of plants and flowering trees blossom across Southern California’s gardens.

In fact, April is often the time when visitors can see the greatest variety of blooming plants throughout the gardens, making it one of the most rewarding months for photographers and nature lovers alike.

One of the most popular destinations for spring flowers is Descanso Gardens, a 150-acre botanical garden nestled in the foothills above Los Angeles. In spring, visitors can stroll through colorful displays of tulips, daffodils, irises, and lilacs, along with flowering trees and vibrant seasonal annuals planted throughout the Promenade and Rose Garden.

Native plants such as penstemons, yarrows, mallows, and salvias also bloom during April, adding beautiful natural color to the California Garden.

The wide walking paths, shady oak forests, and landscaped flower beds make Descanso an especially popular location for family portraits, engagement photos, and yearly spring pictures with babies and young children.

The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden also puts on an unforgettable spring display. Visit the beautiful botanic garden to find seasonal color as several striking trees and flowers reach their peak bloom.

In the South American section, bright yellow Acacia blossoms add vibrant bursts of color, while the stunning Tabebuia trees -often called golden trumpet and pink trumpet- create dramatic canopies of flowers around Tallac Knoll and near the Peacock Pavilion.

These trumpet-shaped blooms often blanket the ground beneath the trees, creating one of the Arboretum’s most beautiful spring scenes.

April is also a wonderful time to stroll through the gardens in search of blooming roses, which begin to appear throughout the grounds as temperatures warm.

With its lakes, historic structures, and winding garden paths, the Arboretum offers countless picturesque spots to enjoy the seasonal blooms.

Meanwhile, the world-famous The Huntington Botanical Gardens offers 130 acres of themed gardens where spring highlights include flowering fruit trees, camellias, desert garden blooms, and thousands of roses beginning their seasonal display.

With peaceful walking paths, elegant landscapes, and incredible seasonal color, these botanical gardens are among the best places in Los Angeles to experience spring and capture stunning photos surrounded by flowers.

5 – City of Stem Los Angeles + Maker Faire

Description:

One of the most exciting science events in Southern California returns this spring with City of STEM Los Angeles + LA Maker Faire on Sunday, April 26 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the South Lawn of Exposition Park.

This free, all-ages festival is the official science festival of Los Angeles County and one of the largest celebrations of science, creativity, and invention in the region.

Visitors can spend the day exploring hands-on exhibits, interactive workshops, and live demonstrations that bring science, engineering, art, and technology to life in a fun outdoor environment.

The festival brings together more than 200 exhibitors from across SoCal, including scientists, engineers, artists, universities, museums, and independent makers showcasing their creative projects.

Guests can try activities such as building circuit boards, experimenting with screen printing, piloting drones, exploring mobile museums, and learning the science behind everything from magic shows to lowrider engineering.

The event also includes main stage talks, panel discussions, performances, and workshops, creating a lively environment where visitors of all ages can discover how innovation happens in real life.

Events like this are exactly the kind of celebration that LifehacksLA loves to support. The Maker Faire movement highlights inventors, creators, and problem-solvers from all walks of life who are building fascinating projects, gadgets, and experiments.

By attending City of STEM, visitors are not only having a fun day exploring science -they are also supporting local creators, students, engineers, and innovators who are shaping the future through curiosity and creativity.

Southern California is well known for its sprawling and far reaching highways which many people use to take in state road trips. But some of the most memorable journeys begin at the historic halls of Los Angeles Union Station.

From this iconic landmark, travelers can step aboard and step back in time, leaving the stress of traffic behind for a different kind of adventure.

Train travel invites you to slow down and simply enjoy the rhythm of the ride. As the train pulls away from the platforms, the scenery begins to change, revealing some of California’s most beautiful landscapes unfolding beyond the window.

1 – From Los Angeles to San Clemente

Description:

The journey from Los Angeles Union Station to the seaside town of San Clemente is one of the most enjoyable coastal rail trips in Southern California.

Most travelers take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, which runs along the region’s coastline and connects Los Angeles with beach towns throughout Orange and San Diego counties.

The ride typically takes around an hour and a half, giving passengers plenty of time to relax and watch Southern California’s landscape unfold outside the window—from busy city neighborhoods and inland hills to the wide blue horizon of the Pacific Ocean.

What makes this trip especially memorable is the arrival at San Clemente Pier station. Few train stations in California offer an entrance quite like this one.

The platform sits right beside the famous pier and only steps from the sand, meaning that when you step off the train you are essentially already at the beach.

Travelers can walk straight toward the water, explore nearby cafés and shops, or wander through the heart of downtown.

The station itself is located at the base of the pier and provides immediate access to the shoreline and surrounding attractions, making it one of the most unique rail stops on the Pacific Surfliner route.

Once you arrive, the charm of San Clemente becomes clear. The town has carefully preserved much of its original character, with architecture inspired by the Spanish Colonial style popular in the 1920s, giving the community the feel of a relaxed seaside village.

The San Clemente Pier stretches far into the Pacific and is a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Anglers often line the railings hoping to catch yellowfin croaker, corbina, sand bass, or mackerel, while others simply enjoy the ocean breeze and sweeping coastal views.

Take this trip and enjoy taking beautiful pictures, or a peaceful walk above the waves.

1 – Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn

Description:

Our first recommendation is Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn, affectionately known as Walt’s Barn in Griffith Park.  Located in the verdant north end of Griffith Park, tucked near Travel Town and the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum, is Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn.  This delightful family-friendly hidden gem celebrates one of Walt Disney’s greatest passions outside of movies: trains.

Originally constructed in the backyard of Walt’s Holmby Hills home to house his beloved Carolwood Pacific Railroad and to serve as his personal workshop, the barn was lovingly dismantled and reconstructed in Griffith Park in 1999 so that the public could continue to enjoy this unique piece of Disney history.

Inside, visitors are treated to a rich collection of artifacts, memorabilia, and personal tools that reflect Walt’s deep fascination with railroading and its influence on his creative life and Imagineering legacy.

Walt’s Barn brims with charm and stories that appeal to Disney fans and curious explorers alike.  Adjacent exhibits often include original railroad cars from early Disneyland itineraries and miniature structures once owned by Disney’s friends and fellow enthusiasts.

Admission and parking are free, though donations are happily accepted to support ongoing preservation.

Walt’s Barn is open to the public on the third Sunday of each month from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, making it a perfect outing that can easily be paired with a day in Griffith Park or a visit to nearby Travel Town or the Los Angeles Zoo.

Location: 5202 Zoo Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027

2 – The Fowler Museum at UCLA

Description:

The Fowler Museum at UCLA is one of Los Angeles’s true underrated and hidden gems for the cultured and the curios. Far from your typical art museum, The Fowler offers an expansive journey into global arts and material culture, with rich collections spanning Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Indigenous Americas.

The museum also houses notable European silver from the 16th–19th centuries gifted by Francis E. Fowler, along with Neolithic tools and a diverse range of folk textiles, particularly from Southeastern Europe.

But the experience doesn’t end inside the galleries. Set against the lush backdrop of UCLA’s North Campus, the Fowler sits just steps away from other serene cultural retreats.

Wander through the tranquil Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, where more than 70 modern and contemporary sculptures by world-renowned artists are beautifully integrated with nature’s calm, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor art experience.

Then, take a leisurely stroll or picnic through the Mathias Botanical Garden, a living museum of plants from around the world that offers peaceful paths and shaded benches among exotic foliage.

Guests can enjoy dinner at the end of the visit.  One great restaurant here is Plateia, which is located in the UCLA Luskin Conference Center and hotel, just a short distance from the museum.  For more casual vibes or quick bites, stop by Wolfgang Puck Express, Northern Lights, Kerckhoff Coffee House, or Ackerman Union.

Location:308 Charles E Young Dr N, Los Angeles, CA 90024

3 – The Mosaic Tile House (Venice)

Description:

The Mosaic Tile House in Venice is one of Southern California’s most delightfully unusual hidden gems. What began as a humble 1940s bungalow has, since 1994, been lovingly transformed by artists Cheri Pann and Gonzalo Duran into a kaleidoscopic wonderland of color, texture, and imagination.

Every surface of this home from exterior walls and pathways to interior cabinets and floors has been meticulously adorned with vibrant tiles, splintered glass, and handcrafted mosaics, creating an immersive art environment that feels as alive and dynamic as the Venice community itself.

This is a very special place for creative pictures and inspiration for DYI projects.  Make reservations online and plan your visit.  Tours are available on Saturdays only and admission is $20 for adults.

The journey through the property reveals details that reward close attention: benches and garden sculptures inspired by Gaudí, whimsical figures hiding in tile scenes, and rich narrative vignettes woven into every nook.

Location: 1116 Palms Blvd, Venice, CA 90291

4 – Battleship USS Iowa Museum

Description:

Another great museum and hidden gem is Battleship IOWA Museum in San Pedro, this is an excellent trip for curious explorers because it is like stepping into a colossal time capsule. Docked majestically at Berth 87 on the Los Angeles Waterfront, this historic naval vessel was commissioned in 1943 as the lead ship of the last class of U.S. battleships built, serving with distinction in World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War.

During her active years, the USS Iowa earned 11 battle stars and the affectionate title “Battleship of Presidents,” having hosted several U.S. commanders-in-chief aboard her steel decks, including a famously installed bathtub for President Franklin Roosevelt on a secret wartime voyage.

Today, the USS Iowa is a fully immersive museum experience that brings maritime history vividly to life.

Open daily for tours and educational programs, visitors can explore multiple decks and compartments once bustling with sailors, from the towering 16-inch guns on the main battery decks to the officers’ wardroom, enlisted mess areas, and even the armored bridge where big decisions were made.

Interactive exhibits and self-guided audio tours help illuminate what life was like at sea, while special experiences like crew-led tours and scavenger hunts make the visit engaging for all ages.

Location:250 S Harbor Blvd, San Pedro, CA 90731

5 – Museum of Hindu Architecture

Description:

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills is one of Southern California’s most breathtaking architectural treasures, and tucked within its intricately carved marble walls is a true hidden gem: the Museum of Hindu Architecture.

The mandir’s luminous white stone, hand-carved columns, and soaring domes immediately transport you to another world. Built using traditional Hindu architectural principles, the structure was crafted from Italian marble and Indian sandstone, with each piece carved by artisans and assembled like a giant three-dimensional puzzle.

The museum enhances the experience by inviting visitors to understand not just the beauty of what they see, but the deep symbolism behind it.

Inside the Museum of Hindu Architecture, guests discover how sacred geometry, symmetry, and spiritual philosophy shape every element of a mandir’s design.

Exhibits explain how ancient texts guide measurements, proportions, and orientation, all intended to create harmony between nature, humanity, and the divine.

Detailed models, educational panels, and visual displays break down how thousands of individually carved pieces came together to form the Chino Hills mandir.

You’ll gain insight into the meaning behind the lotus motifs, ornate pillars, and sculpted deities, making your walk through the temple feel even more intentional and awe-inspiring.

Visitors are welcome throughout the week, and admission to both the mandir and museum is free, though modest dress is required as this is an active place of worship.

The peaceful gardens, reflective fountains, and pristine grounds make it an especially serene spot for photography; the marble glows beautifully in morning and late-afternoon light.

Whether you’re drawn by architecture, culture, spirituality, or simply the desire to discover something extraordinary in Southern California, the Museum of Hindu Architecture at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir offers a meaningful and visually stunning experience that feels worlds away, yet is right here in Chino Hills.
