Palos Verdes scenic drive

Spring is one of the most rewarding times to take a scenic drive and explore Southern California. The blooming wildflowers, and clear skies make every view energizing.

From coastal highways to mountain ridgelines and quiet canyon roads, the season brings out all beauty and color. It is the perfect time to slow down, take a scenic route, and enjoy the natural beauty that unfolds along the way.

In this guide, we have gathered some of the best scenic drives for spring across California, each offering a unique perspective of the season.

Some routes highlight ocean views and coastal cliffs, while others take you through rolling hills, open valleys, or flower-filled landscapes that only appear for a short time each year.  We hope you’ll love them all!

1 – Pacific Coast Highway (Santa Monica → Malibu)

Description:

The Pacific Coast Highway drive from Santa Monica to Malibu is one of the most accessible and rewarding coastal routes in Southern California, covering roughly 15–20 miles along Highway 1 with uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean.

As you leave Santa Monica and pass through Pacific Palisades, the scenery shifts quickly and urban edges give way to open coastline, sandy beaches, and dramatic bluffs.

Spring is arguably the most magical time to experience this route. Following the winter rains, the usually golden hillsides undergo a vibrant transformation into a lush, emerald green. It is the peak season for coastal wildflowers; you’ll see blankets of bright yellow giant coreopsis, purple lupine, and the iconic orange California poppy spilling down the bluffs toward the sand.

The air is crisp and clear, and often free from the thick “June Gloom” fog that can obscure the horizon in early summer. The mild temperatures are perfect for rolling down the windows to catch the scent of salt spray and blooming jasmine.

To ensure your drive is a serene escape rather than a test of patience, timing is everything. On weekdays, you’ll want to avoid the “commuter crush” by staying off the PCH between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM (heading south toward LA) and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM (heading north toward Malibu).

For the ultimate experience, aim for a mid-week late morning or a Sunday afternoon about two hours before sunset.

This “Golden Hour” window not only provides the smoothest traffic flow but also bathes the cliffs in a warm, honey-hued light that makes the spring colors pop against the deep blue sea.

Location: Pacific Coast Highway (Santa Monica → Malibu) CA-1

2 – Mulholland Drive (Hollywood Hills Ridgeline)

Description:

Our next recommendation is Mulholland Drive.  It is one of Los Angeles’ most iconic scenic routes, following the ridgeline of the Hollywood Hills with sweeping views of the city on one side and the San Fernando Valley on the other.

Stretching for more than 20 miles, the drive connects areas near the Hollywood Bowl to the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains, offering multiple scenic overlooks along the way.

Popular stops such as the Hollywood Bowl Overlook, Universal City Overlook, and several smaller vista points provide easy access to panoramic views without requiring long hikes.

The road itself is narrow and winding in sections, which encourages a slower pace and makes the experience feel more intentional and immersive.

Spring is one of the best times to explore Mulholland Drive because the surrounding hills are at their most vibrant. Seasonal greenery covers the hillsides, and native wildflowers appear in patches along the ridgeline and nearby trails.

Visibility is often better than in summer, when haze can soften the skyline, so on clear spring days you can see across the Los Angeles Basin, downtown skyline, and even out toward the Pacific Ocean.

Stop for great pics! The Hollywood Bowl Overlook is one of the most accessible spots for photos, offering a clear view of the Hollywood Bowl, downtown Los Angeles, and the surrounding hills.

For a different perspective, the Universal City Overlook provides a sweeping view of the San Fernando Valley, especially striking on clear spring days.

If you would like to pair the drive with a relaxed break, consider starting or ending your route near Studio City, where you will find well-regarded local coffee shops and casual cafés just minutes from the eastern entrance to Mulholland.

Approaching the drive this way turns it into a more complete outing, with a balance of scenic viewpoints and comfortable places to pause and enjoy the setting.

Location:7036 Mulholland Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90068

3 – Topanga Canyon → Malibu Canyon Loop

Description:

Another excellent scenic drive to add to your spring list is the Topanga Canyon to Malibu Canyon Loop, a route that offers a completely different perspective of Southern California.

Instead of following the coastline, this drive takes you through the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains, where winding canyon roads connect Topanga Canyon Boulevard with Malibu Canyon Road.

The loop typically begins inland near Woodland Hills or the San Fernando Valley, climbs through Topanga Canyon, and then descends toward the coast before circling back through Malibu Canyon.

The entire route can be completed in about one to two hours depending on stops, but the variety of landscapes makes it feel like a much longer journey.

Spring is when this loop truly stands out. The hills are covered in fresh green vegetation, and seasonal wildflowers appear along the roadside and throughout nearby parks such as Topanga State Park.

Cooler temperatures make the drive more comfortable, especially since much of the route does not have direct ocean breezes.

You will notice a refreshing shift in scenery as you move between shaded canyon sections, open ridgelines, and wide valley views. Wildlife is also more active in spring, so it is not uncommon to spot birds, deer, or other native species along quieter stretches of the road.

One of the highlights of this loop is the opportunity to stop in the small community of Topanga, which has long been known for its artistic and bohemian character.

A fun fact is that Topanga Canyon has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and music videos because of its distinctive rugged landscape and secluded feel.

For a relaxed break, local cafés in Topanga offer a convenient place to pause before continuing toward Malibu. As a simple tip, consider driving the loop in a clockwise direction so that you descend into Malibu Canyon with wider, more open views ahead of you.

This approach not only enhances the visual experience but also makes it easier to access scenic pullouts along the way.

Location: Topanga Canyon → Malibu Canyon Loop

4 – Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve Drive

Description:

Our next recommendation is the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve Drive, one of the most seasonal and visually striking experiences in California. Located near Lancaster, this drive centers around the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve and the surrounding rural roads that weave through the high desert.

Unlike coastal or canyon drives, this route offers wide open views of rolling hills that can transform into vibrant fields of orange during peak bloom. The drive itself is flexible, allowing you to explore nearby roads at your own pace while stopping at designated viewpoints and trailheads throughout the reserve.

Spring is the defining season for this drive, typically between March and early May, when California poppies bloom depending on rainfall and temperature conditions.

In strong bloom years, the hills appear almost painted in bright orange, with additional wildflowers such as lupine and goldfields adding layers of color.

A helpful tip is that poppies tend to open in the late morning and early afternoon when temperatures rise, so timing your visit between about 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM often provides the most vibrant views.

Wind is also a common factor in this area, so calmer days usually offer the best conditions for photography and walking the trails.

The reserve is one of the most reliable places to see California poppies in large numbers during bloom season. For the best experience, plan to stop at the visitor center for current bloom updates and then take one of the short loop trails that lead directly into the fields.

This drive is about experiencing a natural event that only appears for a short window each year.

Location: Antelope Valley Poppy reserve Drive 93536

5 –Palos Verdes Peninsula Coastal Drive

Description:

Our last recommendation is one of the most intimate and quietly stunning coastal drives in Southern California. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Coastal Drive offers a refreshing contrast to busier beach routes, following the edge of the peninsula through Rancho Palos Verdes and Palos Verdes Estates.

Along the way, you will find elevated ocean views, and dramatic cliffs. Key stops include the iconic Point Vicente Lighthouse and the coastal viewpoints near Terranea Resort, both offering excellent vantage points for photos and short walks along the bluffs.

Which plants are native to this area? Expect to see patches of yellow mustard flowers, and clusters of purple lupine adding soft color against the green spring vegetation.

The area is also rich in coastal sage scrub, a native plant community that comes to life in spring. This includes plants like California sagebrush, black sage, and white sage, many of which produce small, fragrant blooms.

These plants are not only visually appealing but also release a light, earthy scent that becomes more noticeable on warm days. Along the cliffs and open spaces, you may also see buckwheat and toyons, which contribute texture and seasonal color to the landscape.

The coastal vegetation is fresh and green, and visibility is often clearer in Spring time when temperatures are mild, making it comfortable to step out at overlooks or walk along nearby coastal trails.

It is also a great season for spotting marine life, including migrating gray whales that pass along the coast during late winter and early spring.

The Point Vicente Lighthouse has been featured in numerous films and television productions due to its classic coastal setting. For a simple way to enhance your visit, consider planning a few intentional stops along the route, as there are several scenic spots perfect for a quiet break overlooking the ocean.

This drive lends itself beautifully to a short pause for stretching, a peaceful moment of meditation, or capturing photos along the bluffs.

We hope you add this scenic drive, along with the others in this guide, to your list of spring experiences in Southern California.

Location: Palos Verdes Peninsula Coastal Drive 90275

Southern California is well known for its sprawling and far reaching highways which many people use to take in state road trips. But some of the most memorable journeys begin at the historic halls of Los Angeles Union Station.

From this iconic landmark, travelers can step aboard and step back in time, leaving the stress of traffic behind for a different kind of adventure.

Train travel invites you to slow down and simply enjoy the rhythm of the ride. As the train pulls away from the platforms, the scenery begins to change, revealing some of California’s most beautiful landscapes unfolding beyond the window.

1 – From Los Angeles to San Clemente

Description:

The journey from Los Angeles Union Station to the seaside town of San Clemente is one of the most enjoyable coastal rail trips in Southern California.

Most travelers take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, which runs along the region’s coastline and connects Los Angeles with beach towns throughout Orange and San Diego counties.

The ride typically takes around an hour and a half, giving passengers plenty of time to relax and watch Southern California’s landscape unfold outside the window—from busy city neighborhoods and inland hills to the wide blue horizon of the Pacific Ocean.

What makes this trip especially memorable is the arrival at San Clemente Pier station. Few train stations in California offer an entrance quite like this one.

The platform sits right beside the famous pier and only steps from the sand, meaning that when you step off the train you are essentially already at the beach.

Travelers can walk straight toward the water, explore nearby cafés and shops, or wander through the heart of downtown.

The station itself is located at the base of the pier and provides immediate access to the shoreline and surrounding attractions, making it one of the most unique rail stops on the Pacific Surfliner route.

Once you arrive, the charm of San Clemente becomes clear. The town has carefully preserved much of its original character, with architecture inspired by the Spanish Colonial style popular in the 1920s, giving the community the feel of a relaxed seaside village.

The San Clemente Pier stretches far into the Pacific and is a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Anglers often line the railings hoping to catch yellowfin croaker, corbina, sand bass, or mackerel, while others simply enjoy the ocean breeze and sweeping coastal views.

Take this trip and enjoy taking beautiful pictures, or a peaceful walk above the waves.

Location: San clemente pier ca

2 – From LA to San Juan Capistrano

Description:

The train ride from Los Angeles Union Station to San Juan Capistrano offers a journey through some of Southern California’s most interesting landscapes. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner carries passengers away from downtown Los Angeles into the rolling hills and coastal communities of Orange County.

Arriving in San Juan Capistrano feels like stepping into a different era. The station sits right in the heart of the historic district, where Spanish-style architecture and red-tile roofs create the atmosphere of an old California mission town.

Just a short walk from the platform stands the renowned Mission San Juan Capistrano, one of the state’s most treasured historic landmarks.

Visitors can explore the mission’s beautiful gardens, museum galleries, and the historic chapel while learning about the region’s early Spanish and Indigenous history.

The grounds are peaceful and filled with fountains, archways, and centuries-old structures that make the visit both educational and visually stunning.

Another wonderful part of this stop is the food scene right around the station. Just steps from the tracks, you’ll find Trevor’s at the Tracks, a beloved local restaurant known for its welcoming patio and flavorful menu that reflects the character of the town.

If you’re arriving early in the day or planning a morning train trip, Mollies Cafe and Bistro opens daily at 6:30 a.m. and is a local staple for breakfast and coffee before exploring the historic district.

With its beautiful scenery, rich history, and excellent dining just steps from the platform, the train ride from Los Angeles to San Juan Capistrano makes for a fun and easy Southern California day trip.

Location:26701 Verdugo St. San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675

3 – Los Angeles to Ventura

Description:

Take a trip to beautiful Ventura County! Hop aboard the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and enjoy a relaxing ride north along Southern California’s coast.

As the train moves through the Los Angeles basin and into Ventura County, the scenery begins to shift—urban neighborhoods give way to rolling hills, palm-lined communities, and eventually the expansive horizon of the Pacific Ocean.

Along the way, riders can sit back and take in the changing views as sandy beaches, coastal bluffs, and stretches of sparkling Pacific water appear outside the train’s large windows, turning the journey itself into part of the adventure

The train ride from Los Angeles Union Station to Ventura is one of the most relaxing ways to experience Southern California’s beautiful coastline. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner  travels along a scenic stretch of rail and gradually transitions from the busy neighborhoods of Los Angeles to wide coastal views and open ocean.

The large picture windows allow riders to take in the changing landscape as the train moves past sandy beaches, rugged bluffs, and stretches of sparkling Pacific water. This portion of the route is especially beloved for its dramatic ocean scenery, making the journey itself a highlight of the trip.

Comfort is part of the experience aboard the Pacific Surfliner. Passengers can settle into spacious seats and enjoy free onboard Wi-Fi, making it easy to read, work, or simply browse while the train rolls along the coast.

For those who want an upgraded experience, Business Class seating is also available, offering extra-comfortable seating along with complimentary snacks and beverages.

Location:  Harbor Boulevard and Figueroa Street, Ventura, CA 93001

4 – Los Angeles to Santa Barbara

The journey from Los Angeles Union Station to Santa Barbara is often considered the most iconic day trip on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner.  Between Ventura and Santa Barbara, the tracks run right along the Pacific Ocean, offering sweeping views of sandy beaches, dramatic bluffs, and endless blue water.

The railway hugs the shoreline for miles, giving passengers front-row seats to waves rolling toward the coast, surfers waiting for the perfect set, and seabirds gliding above the water.

5 – Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo

Description:

Turn a scenic train ride into a full coastal adventure.  The journey from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo delivers one of the most memorable rail experiences in California.

Riding the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, passengers travel deep into the Central Coast. This longer ride rewards travelers with an ever-changing view of California’s geography, from coastal plains and rolling farmland to rugged cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

What makes this route especially remarkable is the stretch north of Santa Barbara, where the railroad runs through areas that are largely inaccessible by highway. Here, the tracks wind along dramatic coastal bluffs and quiet stretches of shoreline that feel far removed from the busy cities of Southern California.

Passengers may spot waves crashing against rocky outcrops, long empty beaches, and wide open vistas where the ocean seems to stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

It’s one of the rare places in the state where travelers can experience the raw beauty of the coastline without crowds, traffic, or development—one reason many rail enthusiasts consider this portion of the trip among the most scenic train rides in California.

Arriving in San Luis Obispo introduces visitors to one of the Central Coast’s most beloved towns. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, historic charm, and vibrant downtown, San Luis Obispo offers plenty to explore just beyond the station.

The city is home to the famous Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, beautiful nearby vineyards, and the lively weekly farmers’ market that fills the streets with food, music, and local culture.

With its blend of coastal scenery, small-town character, and easygoing pace, San Luis Obispo makes a fitting grand finale to a list of Southern California’s best scenic train rides.

Along the way, guests will encounter luminous scenes of Southeast Asian animals and an African landscape alive with sculptural lights representing the continent’s iconic wildlife.

Families can rediscover fan favorites such as the giant walk-in kaleidoscope, interactive light displays, and photo-ops with Santa Claus (available for an additional fee).

2 – Best Holiday Decorated Neighborhoods

Description:

Every year in December, certain Los Angeles neighborhoods resemble charming Christmas villages, delighting crowds of all ages with their beautiful decorations and festive spirit. Here are our top recommendations for the best neighborhoods to visit this season, each offering its own unique atmosphere and tradition.

One of the most beloved traditions is the Upper Hastings Ranch Holiday Light Display in Pasadena, a community effort that dates back to the 1950s. Residents coordinate elaborate themes street by street.  This is one of the most fun of all neighborhoods to visit!

Next is Candy Cane Lane  in Woodland Hills.  This event continues its decades-long reign as one of Los Angeles’ most famous festive neighborhoods.

Centered around Lubao and Oxnard Streets, this eight-block stretch bursts to life each December with animated decorations, snow machines, music, and glowing candy-themed displays.

Many residents go all out with synchronized light shows and interactive decorations, turning the area into a lively, walkable celebration.

Last but not least, is one of our favorites, Sleepy Hollow Christmas Lights Extravaganza in Torrance.  This neighborhood offers one of the most spectacular residential light displays in Southern California.

Nearly every home participates, displaying incredible and creative decorations.  Visitors can walk or drive through the glowing streets while sipping hot cocoa sold by local families.

3 – Holidays at the Theme Parks

Description:

When it comes to festive celebrations, SoCal theme parks know how to outshine even the most dazzling tree. Each December, these parks transform into immersive holiday destinations filled with music, lights, and a little bit of movie magic.

At Knott’s Merry Farm in Buena Park, guests are invited until January 4th, to enjoy a cozy, storybook atmosphere. Stroll through Ghost Town as snowflakes fall every evening, browse booths in the Christmas Crafts Village, and catch live performances like “Home for the Holidays” and “A Calico Christmas Carol.”

Also enjoy all the seasonal treats including warm cinnamon sugar churros, handcrafted fudge, and peppermint hot cocoa.

At Universal Studios Hollywood, the Grinch himself takes center stage during Grinchmas Christmas. The park’s whimsical Whoville-inspired celebration fills Universal Plaza with a towering, twisted Christmas tree, mischievous Whos, and daily performances by the joyful Who-ville singers.

Guests can meet the Grinch in his fuzzy green glory, pose with Max the dog, and enjoy snow flurries falling amid festive laughter.

Across the park, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter also joins in the festivities, complete with magical snow on the rooftops of Hogsmeade and “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle”.

It’s a perfect blend of classic Hollywood fun and pure Christmas enchantment, ideal for Angelenos who love the big-screen kind of holiday sparkle.

Our next recommendation is the one and only Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, where holiday dreams come to life! Main Street, U.S.A. glows with garlands and wreaths, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle shimmers under a blanket of lights, and snow falls nightly as the fireworks burst above.

Special ride overlays bring new magic to fan favorites; it’s a small world Holiday and Haunted Mansion Holiday are a must see attractions.

Also the Festival of Holidays at Disney California Adventure fills the air with music, cultural celebrations, and seasonal foods from around the world.

Over in Valencia, Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Holiday in the Park brings thrill rides and millions of twinkling lights together for an electric evening experience, complete with holiday music zones, festive treats, and giant size ornaments decorating the midway.

If your little ones are fans of Elmo, Big Bird, and of course the beloved Cookie Monster, consider a short family trip south to Sesame Place San Diego for A Very Furry Christmas.

This cheerful holiday event turns the park into a Sesame Street-inspired winter celebration, complete with snowy walkways, holiday shows, and meet-and-greets with furry friends dressed in their festive best.

Guests can see Cookie Monster in his Santa suit, enjoy themed rides, and even experience “Elmo’s Christmas Wish” live on stage.

This adorable, joy-filled experience is just under two hours from Los Angeles, making it the perfect weekend getaway for families looking to extend the holiday fun beyond the city.

4 – Holiday Ice Rinks

Description:

This awesome season also brings outdoor ice rinks! The perfect place to bring your kids, from little ones beginning to learn how to use ice skates, to your older teens who are ready to show their skills.

These  pop up ice rinks are now across the city, and turning shopping plazas and downtown squares into festive gathering spots.

One of the most enchanting is the Irvine Spectrum Center Ice Rink, nestled right between the magnificent Christmas tree and the iconic Ferris wheel.

Open now through early January , it’s a scene straight out of a holiday postcard, complete with twinkling lights, joyful music, and families gliding hand in hand under the stars.

On select mornings, kids can even Skate with Santa, while nearby restaurants and cafés offer cozy spots for hot chocolate or a celebratory meal after skating.

The atmosphere is both lively and family-friendly—ideal for creating that perfect Southern California holiday memory without leaving the sunshine behind.

For people who like visiting the big city, the L.A. Kings Holiday Ice Rink at L.A. LIVE brings a classic winter experience to the heart of downtown. Located right beside the glittering plaza and its towering Christmas tree, this rink is a favorite for date nights, family outings, and after-work fun.

The surrounding area comes alive with festive energy, holiday music fills the air, LED lights sparkle across the entertainment district, and the glow of the nearby skyscrapers adds a touch of urban magic.

5 – Amazing Holiday Boat Parades

Description:

Few holiday traditions capture Southern California’s coastal charm like its dazzling boat parades. Each December, local harbors display floating festivals of light.

Expect to see fantastic yachts, sailboats, and tugboats decked in glittering decorations.  Here are our recommendations.

At the L.A. Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade, taking place on Saturday, December 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., the Port of Los Angeles once again hosts its time-honored celebration.

This beloved San Pedro tradition features elaborately illuminated boats cruising the main channel, each creatively interpreting the annual theme.

Enjoy the show from prime viewing spots such as Banning’s Landing, California Yacht Marina, and West Harbor at the newly reimagined San Pedro waterfront.

The celebration continues the following weekend with the Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade, set for Saturday, December 13, at Burton Chace Park.

Now in its 63rd year, this beloved event begins with a brilliant fireworks show at 5:45 p.m., followed by the parade from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Dozens of boats light up the marina, each one themed and choreographed to music.

This year’s theme, “A Nightmare Before Christmas,” promises creative, whimsical displays that merge holiday cheer with a touch of Tim Burton-style imagination.

From San Pedro to Marina del Rey, these glittering flotillas perfectly embody the spirit of a California Christmas.  Here the joy of the holidays meets the beauty of the Pacific.

So, bundle up,  and let the twinkle of the lights on the water be your grand finale to a season filled with wonder, warmth, and uniquely Los Angeles-style cheer.
